I will be going to London (actually Singlewell) to visit my daughter for a long Christmas holiday. I am anxious to know of any "must see" glass places while I am there. Anywhere within a 200km distance is fine. I expect to do some exploreing anyway. Thanks!

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. A huge collection of high class craft objects from many periods. Also the ancient glass in the British Museum.

There is good stuff at Broadfield House Glass Museum, Kingswinford, near Birmingham, and at The World of Glass (the Pilkington Museum) at St. Helens, between Liverpool and Manchester, but these are a good bit more than 200 km from London. By the way, our British cousind still use miles for travel distances.

The Ashmolean museum in Oxford is about an hour by coach (Greyhound in your money, only a bit slower) (a lot slower in fact). Free to get in, closed Mondays, ancient blown and engraved work, lots of ideas can be got from the ancient jewelry & beads;

Most museums are closed on Mondays.

There are some nice galleries in Cambridge (also an hour by coach from London) and while you're in the area, the stained glass museum at Ely is worth a look;

The Crafts Council at 44a Pentonville Road is 20mins walk from Kings Cross station. Their shop is always worth a look and you can find out about current exhibitions & events there, they are really helpful. There is a Photostore and you can search for Makers on their register either by name or media -lots of good glass;

Oh, and not to forget Studio5 at Stockwood Craft Museum (my place!) so make sure you call in;

I am also going back to UK for a family visit and plan to see some glass galleries. I found one through the web called studio glass at 63 Connaught Rd London (near St James park). Check out the web page. Also the V & A is worth a visit.

Way up north there's the National Glass Centre in Sunderland (near Newcastle on Tyne). The main exhibition varies, http://www.3k1.co.uk/ngc/general/indexglass2.htm but it is also the home to the university glass studios, where - if you are lucky - you can get to see some pretty amazing kilns (with a crane to lift in the glass) and talk to the researchers working there. The studio is not open to the public, but say the right thing and sound like you know what you're talking about and you never know your luck.
Rather more than 200km from London though...
