55-J Paper

Post by Nancy Juhasz »

Hi, I am in the need for fiber paper and have found a source locally that handles 55-J fiber paper. It is rated at 2300 degrees according to the person that I talked. He is reluctant to sell it to me since it is not 110-J that I asked for. He said that people that do ceramics buy it from him all the time. My question is will it work for me as a seperator between shelf and glass and if so why would I want 110-J instead of 55-J paper? Thanks for any feed back. My new big coffing kiln goes in today and it has been suggested to me that I use paper instead of kiln wash my shelves all the time. Perhaps in the future I can get a fiber board shelf so I will ask a couple of questions now about it. The same place that I can get 55-J paper has fiber board that is they said 1/2 inch thick is that thick enough for a shelf right on the bottom of the kiln or should I fing out more about it before I ask stupid questions. I have Cermaguard in a big sheet can it be used for a shelf in the bottom for full fuse or not?

Nanc who is showing how little she knows.

I suspect he means 550-J (not 55-J). This is a standard grade fiber paper that is widely available. It will work fine on the kiln shelf.

The difference between 550-J and 110-J is that the 110 is rigid and the 550 is flexible. The 110 will last longer than the 550 (about 25 to 50 firings, vs. 6 to 12), but either will work as a separator. The "J" means the thickness, which in this case is 1/8".

These are all products by Unifrax. You can learn my about them by clicking on Papers at this link: http://www.unifrax.com/Products Or you can read a bit more about 110 paper and how it differs from standard papers at: http://www.warmglass.com/110J.htm

I use 970 paper from Unifrax. It is flexible. I don't know about the others. 1/2" board is fine on the floor, not so strong off the floor.
