Hi There...
A mold I was preparing for slumping just broke in two pieces as it was drying in the kiln and I've no idea why - can anyone help?
I had re-applied kiln wash to my shelf and dried it in the kiln to 500 and it was cooling but by no means cold.
Having sanded and kiln washed the mold I put it in the kiln to dry on top of the kiln shelf. When the temperature reached 460 I heard a thump and when I looked I saw that the mold had broken into two pieces, the crack was more or less straight through the middle. The mold was a bowl 12inch in diameter and about 4 inches deep.
Best regards
Linda

Sounds like the mold thermal shocked. A lot of my molds come with a little note saying not to heat at more than 250dph. If you heated it afap to 500, that might be your culprit.
