Hi all,,I have been making fused glass wind chimes for a long time,,I have always added the copper wire for hanging,,but just wondering if the sound would change IF I drilled a tiny hole in top and strung them that way..I dont want the change in sound but sometimes my copper wire "moves" alittle.. thanks to all

I don't know what the sound of the chimes is when you hang them from copper wire but when you drill through the glass, the sound is the same as if you are clinking glass together. The smaller the chime pieces, the lighter the sound (like toasting with crystal glasses).

I like drilling my chimes. I do find it does change the sound and it does look more authentic. That is just my opinion, but I do sell a lot of them.

Re: Drilling or Adding copper wire???
Do you tune your glass for the wind chimes? I started working on making a glass xylophone and as I got into finding out information about how the different bars are made to get the correct tone and pitch I found out quit a bit about how to "tune" them which also covered wind chimes. I since bought an inexpensive Korg Chromatic tuner that I've used to tell me what pitch the glass is based on it's length, width and thickness. What I found out about wind chimes was that you want to put the hole for the wire or string at the first overtone node point on the end which is suppose to be at 22.42% of the length from the end. If you put it closer or further away from the end it changes the sound length of the tone. When you get into the technical side of making wind chimes and xylophones it's pretty interesting (I'm a technical type person) even if I'm not musically inclined. My non-fused xylophone prototypes has shone me that I can cut glass strips that actually have a decent tone but I've not gone further with it since I've found to get them to sound right takes more than just measurements and a tuner to get them to sound correct when hit. But I've also been looking at doing tuned (or semi-tuned) glass wind chimes as well.

It's said that inside each of us is an artist trying to get out. Well mine got out... and I haven't seen him since.
