Cutting 6mm slices on a tile saw

Hi
Would really like to know how others are getting around a problem with most tile saws.
The problem is cutting 6mm slices from things like pattern bars.
Most saws have a wide slot in the table for the blade to run through. Cutting a 6mm slice has the danger that the slice will fall through the blade slot into the tray underneath or worse and hazardous, jam in the slot and damage the blade or me.
I have been told to buy a sheet of perspex and attach it to the table and then run the blade through it so it creates a narrow slot for the blade.
Problem, is how to attach it so it can be replaced when damaged, and it reduces the depth of cut.
Surely many of you do this and I would love to hear how you solved the problem.
