large kiln firing
I was wondering if a 23X35 piece is too big to fire without problems? Does the glass have to be thicker the bigger it is? I know that you have to slow down the heat and anneal process the thicker it is. Can you still go from lets say 1650 to 960 at the 9999 rate and then say 60 min hold and 80 ph to...

Re: quality glass cutter
Thanks, where would I find a supplier for that? I have tried searching and nothing specific comes up. I was thinking of trying pieces that start with broken glass and would only be tack fused and then possibly slumped. Art for walls and as a center piece only. Is a kiln that heats to 1700F sufficien...

source for float glass
What is a good source for float glass? Do you use new or salvaged glass? Anyone tried using cullet in tack fusing projects?
Thanks, Joe

Re: quality glass cutter
Thanks to all for the input. Where do you find a cheap source of float glass? Do you use salvage glass? Can float glass be used to slump?
Thanks, Joe

fire polish both sides
I normally fire with the intent of only one side showing. What is I want to do a piece that sits on a table and both sides can be seen?
What if I do a tack fuse of, lets say buffalo chips and I want both sides exposed?
Any particular techniques?
Thanks, Joe

Re: quality glass cutter
Thanks to all who posted. I have only cut bullseye glass so far. Some pieces score great and others come out like I used a jackhammer. The texture on each piece is a little different. Now I have a decision to make. I have been a cabinetmaker for over 30 years so I think in terms of a bandsaw when it...

quality glass cutter
I am looking for a good quality glass cutter as there are tons on the market and I don't know which one to choose as I have little experience.
I did buy one but its terrible or I am terrible with it, or both
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks, Joe

Re: using a torch
Thanks for the input. I guess I am just too impatient. It takes about 15 minutes or so to get back to the 1600 realm. I thought maybe a torch (Like they use in hot glass) might be more expedient. Here is a pic of my latest experiment. I figure it may take me another year to come up with what I am tr...

kiln window replacement glass
I have a 4"X4" window in my kiln and I need a piece of replacement glass as I cannot get the glass clean so its hard to see inside. The glass is about 1/8" thick. Does anyone know of a supplier?
Thanks, Joe

Re: Raking glass
Thanks for the replies. I have been corresponding Tim from the edge of glass for several years now, he is pretty good at his trade. He also has some really good videos. I know that opening the kiln is probably hard on it, but don't know how else to rake. I had designed a kiln that would be great for...

Raking glass
I posted the question below but have not gotten any response. Did the question make sense? Opening the kiln lid drops the temp by about 300 degrees in about 5 seconds. I noticed in working with hot glass, they use a torch sometimes instead of putting back in the glory hole. Is there any reason this ...

using a torch
I was wondering if anyone has used a torch in raking to extend the rake time without having to close the kiln and wait.
Thanks in advance.

cleaning the kiln window
I seem to be getting a build up on my kiln window. My window is about 4X4 and the inside is getting where I can hardly see through it. What is the best thing to clean it with?

Re: need opinion
Thanks for your thoughts! Its always good to get advice and thoughts and encouragement to continue. :) I realize I need to have borders as well, I will be working in that area next. Figuring out the best way to display glass is another avenue that I need to explore. I bought some different glass fix...

Re: need opinion
Oh I forgot to comment on the religion quote;
When people misapply and misquote God's word then they can do evil things. One day soon that will all change as God will not standby and watch indefinitely.
Sorry if that offends someone, but I did not start it.

Re: need opinion
Thanks for the comments. So far I am just practicing. I don't care much for pieces that look like something done on a loom, you too patterned. I like impressionist painting so I would like to go in that direction. I like the raking in a piece. I am still practicing on edges and slumping. I am also n...

repairing kiln shelf
I have a Corelite shelf 1"X24X39 I heated up my kiln too fast (I think) it cracked full length completely. Can it be repaired with a high temp cement mortar or ??? Also, I cant find any company info on Corelite manufacturer. I would like to contact the company that actually makes them to ask th...
