Re: Is is possible for glass to get too hot?
Didn't end up working. The ash did fuse with the glass in an interesting manner worthy of further exploration, but the glass completely welded to the shelf and then spiderweb cracked on cooling. I'm guessing that my kiln shelf paper wasn't designed to deal with temperatures like that and sort of dis...

Re: Is is possible for glass to get too hot?
Thanks for the advice! I'll give it a try today and see what it looks like.

Is is possible for glass to get too hot?
I've got some volcanic ash laying around the shop and for a Sunday project I wanted to experiment incorporating some ash in to glass fusing to see what results I can get. The problem is that volcanic ash doesn't melt until around 2000 F. I can get my kiln that high, but I have no idea what happens i...

Thanks, that's what I was figuring. Next time I'll overlay with a clear piece.AndyT wrote:You would need to have them at least overlap or better yet on a clear base.

Shrinkage during fusing attemp
This is probably a simple newbie error, but I'd appreciate any advice. I'm not a complete stranger to kiln glass work, but I usually work with pot melts and have attempted fusing only a few times. I was working with a single layer of small strips of COE 96 glass and was trying to fuse them using Slu...

Oh, I check it regularly. About every 10 minutes. Didn't mean to give the impression I'm just turning it on and walking away.Kevin Midgley wrote:wear a kitchen timer on your shirt to remind you to go and check the kiln.

Re: Advice on what went wrong
Thanks for the tips, Judd. Right now I don't have a programmable kiln, my good one having died over Christmas. All I have to work with at the moment is a Skutt kiln with a limitless dial. But I'd rather be firing something than not, so I decided to give it a go the best I could and see what happened...

Advice on what went wrong
This is an experimental project I've been working on over the past few days. I'm somewhat satisfied given so many unknown variables, but clearly I need to tweak the process a bit to fix a few problem areas. I was using pieces of tempered red translucent "fire glass" for this project with a...

3D printer to glass casting
I doubt I'm the first one to try this technique, but I thought I'd share it here. The workflow was to take a model I printed on my 3D printer, then use the plastic model to make a mold out of plaster (50% POP/50% silica flour). Then I used glass scrap to fill the mold and fire in the kiln to about 1...

extruding glass strands from pot (photo)
I asked about attempting this technique in a recent thread, but only last night was finally able to give it a shot. What I started out with was a ceramic pot, about 3" x 3". In to this pot I had melted about a quarter of a pound of pulverized glass, all of the same COE. The ceramic pot and...

Re: extruding glass strands from pot
The ceramic pot is about 3" in diameter and about 4" tall. I was thinking of trying to draw/pull strands out of it about 3" or so. I guess I was envisioning something like the following photo, just shorter strands and pulled out to the sides more (for the erupting effect): https://i.p...

Re: extruding glass strands from pot
That's good info to know, thank you. It sounds like it'd be better to hold off on this project until I get a different kiln.

extruding glass strands from pot
I want to attempt a glass extruding project and I thought I'd check here for advice to try to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. Perhaps this technique has a name, and if it does I apologize for not knowing where to search before posting. What I have is a small ceramic pot that I melted abou...

Re: challenges making a glass mask
Thanks, Bert. Those are some good things to think about. You've intrigued me with the idea of a plaster refractory mold as opposed to using ceramic. I actually have a lot of plaster refractory around since I do bronze and silver casting. Maybe what might make the most sense is to print the mask, the...

challenges making a glass mask
Hi All - I've been chewing up days upon days of kiln time trying to make a glass mask and I'm just not quite getting it right. I was hoping for some advice that might save me some time. What I did was make a 3D scan of my wife's face, printed it out on my 3D printer, then used the mask to make a con...

glass won't slump/drape after pot melt
I’m new to glass fusing and slumping, but thus far I’ve been pleased with my results. I’ve experienced a strange problem with my current project, however, and I can’t seem to find any information about what I might be doing wrong. In short, I took a cobalt blue wine bottle, crushed it, then placed i...
