Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves
My kiln wash lasts a long time on my shelves and I like heating them up to where the kiln wash sizzles (but not too much) when it goes on. If you have not figured out how to make your own long lasting and wipe off the bottom of the glass kiln wash then I suggest you do so. It does not matter if it '...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves
Just fill the divots with thick Bullseye kiln wash. Scrape or sand smooth any way you figure will work but wear a dust respirator. Then once smooth, coat the entire shelves as per usual and fire as per normal. Helps to do the filling while the shelves are warm as in slightly above boiling temperatur...

Re: Terrible luck ordering shelves
Go to a large pottery supplier in your area. Ask when they are getting a new shipment of shelves. Physically go through and sort out the shelves you want to buy. The reason there are scratches in them is because 'the best' kiln shelves come from England in wooden crates packed with straw. If the str...

Re: Do kilns REALLY burn "to the ground"
suggestion I would offer is to place a shallow metal baking pan beneath the box containing the vertically positioned mercury relay. Should one ever fail the mercury clean up is simpler.

Re: Do kilns REALLY burn "to the ground"
In my 40 years of playing with glass..... I've seen glass melted half way through a kiln brick floor  The stainless steel mold melted. I was told the elements were still fine and working. Always put a kiln on a fireproof surface. A thick fireproof surface. Well away from combu...

Re: Glass with ceramic inclusion?
You have seen it done successfully. Well have you seen the same piece still successfully together with no cracking a year or more later? Glass has the ability to show the errors in compatibility a long long time after an item has been made. I was given a piece years ago that was disintegrating. Stil...

Cold weather can cause a higher electrical demand and lower voltages being supplied to your location.

The answer is in understanding the heat work in your kiln. Something seemingly tiny is unevenly providing heat work.

That was the point.
If you want to fire pieces like that manually, you need to be reminded and wearing the timer does it.
About 10 minutes will tend to not give you repeatable consistency.

I remember him talking about the project.
