Number one concern for any studio in a home is safety. Double check your homeowners insurance to make sure you don't shoot yourself in the foot. Fire extenguishers. Fire or heat detectors. Up to code wiring and walls. Ventilation! Out with the old; in with the new! Good lighting. Make your studio a ...

Yes I think a heat type would be better than a smoke type unless you mount it where you can easily turnit of while you are making smoke on purpose . If you do turn a detector off, I suggest you do some ritual like putting your car keys or the remote for the tv on it so that you don't leave it turned...

You could burn it before you use it. Always use protection. Unless you don't want to. I was picturing a person w/ a big bushy propane torch (maybe they are called roofing torches?) Anyway, they ar 15-20 at Harbor Frieght. Put on your respirator and drop the spool on a non-flamable surface like bric...

Perhaps one technique would be to apply a splash coat of the plaster-silica investment to your model then use your ceramic slurry for the balance of the mold. Again, try a small item before going to production sized casts. This sounds like a beautiful idea, Tom. I was wondering the same approach bu...

ceramic shell burnout! Are you casting w/ Mold Mix 6/ Zircar? - Should I load the kiln tight? Pack it loosly at first, every kiln is different. I think it really depends on how much juice you got. - Should I use insulating or hard bricks for the mold and flower pot supports? Insulating bricks are a ...

The surface of old glass usually changes over time if exposed to water. I don't quite understand it all yet but the flux gets leached out. This is why old dug up glass loooks iridescent or why some even turns pinky-purple. I know the pinky purple stuff is from using Manganese Dioxide to make the gla...

If you go with creme or dip, use at least nitrile gloves with the stuff. And wash well after use. Do not use if you have open cuts on your hands. Most cremes are ammonium biflouride in solution sometimes with a little sulpheric acid to make it tastier. Ammonium biflouride is probably the mildest aci...
