Board sponsor Warner-Crivellaro has them for the best price I've seen...$1.50 for one, $1.35 for 6, $1.20 for 12.

vinyl cutters

Thanks for the advice, guys. Larry, I sent you a message about this last week sometime 'cause I heard you'd bought a cutter. The Lynx 24 sounds great...only problem is, $$$. I live in Canada, and once I pay the exchange, duty, and shipping, it costs a whole lot more. I guess I could handle going for...

vinyl cutters

I've been researching vinyl cutters lately, and was wondering if anybody has any advice or preferences. I was checking out the Roland Stika in particular. Does anybody have it, and if so, what do you think? I'd be using it for designs on dichroic jewelry.

Thanks for any help,
Peggy

Tile Saw or Manual Cutting

Jim, isn't the glass too thick to cut with the handheld cutters once you've fired it?

Dichroic on clear

Thanks for the suggestions...I'll try it. You know, I could swear I saw a website where they used float and dichroic. I guess it was the kind you're talking about, Brad. What would be the point of combining float and dichroic, and who sells it? Is there a different effect than the dichroic and clear...

Tile Saw or Manual Cutting?

Thanks for the feedback, everybody. I have new questions now. To Brock: I never even heard of kerf before...that's a major consideration. By "lapidary saw", do you mean something different than a tile saw? Perhaps a diamond blade? I checked some websites selling lapidary tools; the choices...

Tile Saw or Manual Cutting?

I do alot of basic earring & pendant glass cutting: a layer of dichroic, then a layer of clear on top for a cap. I'm wondering if using a tile saw might be more time efficient, and might be a little easier on the old back! I could just lay up a good-sized chunk of dichroic, slap the clear on top...

Dichroic on clear

This is probably a stupid question, but here goes... I've seen some wonderful effects with dichroic where you can see through the piece (jewelry). In order to see the dichroic, do you have to fuse multiple layers? Do you use it with float glass? I've simply layered the dichroic on clear glass, and y...

ceramic gold pen

I just bought a ceramic gold pen and can't get it to work. I marked the glass with it, fired it, and nothing. Am I missing something?
Thanks for any help,

Hi Ann, You can get fine silver bezel wire in various widths, or by the sheet and cut your own. I use 3/16". The thing is, it's flat, so it can be easily inserted between two pieces of glass before firing. After firing, you can stick a thin dowel into the loop and hammer the bail with a mallet ...

You can do the same thing by forming a bale out of fine silver bezel wire and fusing it between two pieces of glass. No need for glue this way.

Being a jeweller and a photographer, I've also wondered about how to put pictures on glass. Your question got me thinking, so I tried something... I started with a base of black glass, glued a smaller square of fibre paper on it with the paper sticking out of the top edge. The size of the fibre pape...

I've been investigating sandblasting equipment myself and came across some helpful info at http://www.glastar.com. Under a section called "Assembling your sandblast system", there are diagrams and explanations that make it all quite clear.
Best of luck,

Pencil Blasters

Still trying to figure out this blasted sandblasting thing... I checked out a link Brad suggested for pencil blasters (when I was asking about bead blasters) -- http://www.cdvkiln.com/mensusand.htm -- and right off noticed that they won't ship sandblasters to Canada. Anyway, my big question i...

Beadblasting

Has anyone used a beadblaster instead of a sandblaster to carve images on dichroic? The reason I ask is the difference in price...thousands of dollars for a sandblaster in Rio's catalog, compared to about $150 for a beadblaster.

Thanks,
Peggy

Sandblasting vs. etching cream

Excuse my ignorance, but I'm new to all this. I have a question: will sandblasting or using etching cream give virtually the same effects? I'd like to make designs on dichroic for jewelry, and am wondering if these two methods are just a matter of preference as far as equipment, costs involved, etc....
