I did the same thing and got great results. The dollar bill shrunk about 1/3 and stretched apart.I have been doing many types of float glass tests with various insertions. I too will get some ocassional buble witth nothing but ash left over. This is caused by gas (CO, CO2, ?) given off in a reducing...

help with printing laserjet files without fusing images
My question relates to Wallace and his laser printed images on float glass. I have a laser jet 5mp and need to disconnect the fusing assembly in order to make laser prints that are not fused with the toner. I have my printer shell off and found the fusing assembly. The printer detects when this asse...

I got nice results with just play sand. I was slumping bottles for holiday gifts and used sand. I sprinkled a fine mist/layer on the surface and placed the bottles on the sand. After the melt, the sand came off with my hand and a wire brush. Of course this left the bottom of the bottles a bit roughw...

it would seem that your fused slump work would have to be small in size to fit in the glory hole? Also, how would you be able to ramp up the heat? Unless the glory hole was cool before the firing began, the glass would break in the thermal shock? And if you have to start cool in the glory hole, then...

Well thanks guys.. So I can remove the glass and move it over to an annealing kiln provided I do so before the temp drops to say 1100F. My glass will leave the kiln at temps around 1450 and higher and I would move it into the other kiln within 5 minutes or less. As for the annealing kiln to have ele...

OK, A stupid question about removing glass from a hot fire.
Is there a way to remove / tranfer glass when its above 1400F from the main firing kiln into a secondary annealing kiln. I know Hot Glass blowers do it all the time. I would like to have my work removed from my mainfire kiln into a second holding place to allow for the slow cooldown phase. This woul...

Hugo, A few questions, First thanks for the info Frop0m Wallace. I have his PDF document and it is really helpful. And by the way, It was Wallace Venable not William as I has posted earlier that sent me the info on the burn out being CO and CO2. I am assuming you had better results with the toner tr...

sandwiched photos in float glass
I have been sandswiching laser copies of my photography between sheets of float glass with intersting results. I want to do this without the paper backing and wondered how others may have done so. I am thinking about using overhead transparencies as well as decal transfers. The key for me is that th...

I have seen people slump bottles with the neck opened and then they place a cork back in it afterwards. Looks nice so I tried to do it myself and got some results. What I did was place a big piece of chalk inside the openeing all the way down the neck into the chamber a bit. Then I drilled a thin ho...

Can I cool float glass faster?
OK, I know that slow annealing is needed for glass but how slow is slow? I am using float glass, 1/8 inch thick, sandwiched 2 and 3 layers thick. I have a large 22 c ft kiln and fire with three shelves all loaded. My kiln is very well insulated and will cool down after 700 deg at about 33 deg/hour. ...

Yes, it is peeling on both sides. The stainless steel molds are bowls from a department store. They had the name ssteal on the label. They are rather thin mixing bowls that I have used to slump glass over for drapes. Since then I just use them to contain my sand and do not allow the glass to touch t...

Here are some tips to make your molds dry better. 1. Get the right kind of clay mix. I used to mix my own but its timely so I buy mine from Standard Ceramic Supply Company. Look for clay that is used for high fires. Raku clay can take thermal shock well, stoneware is very durable but not very smooth...

Well Ann, I am a Harbor Freight fan and love the store I am close to. I have not purchased the items you mentioned but plenty of others. My recent purchase is an 8 inching wet grinding wheel and 6 inch wheel I will use for my steel brush. It was on sale for about $35 dollars. Just know these tools a...

well I just tried the magnet and although it did not stick to the mold its self, all the particles (metal flakes) in the mold did stick to the magnet? Anyway, I am sure these are not the quality stainless steel molds sold for such purposes. I am using stainless steel large mixing bowls for a type of...
