BE Mold.....cracked

I just had a BE bowl mold crack while firing off the first applications of BE kiln wash. Hairline crack across the bottom of the mold, through one of the vent holes. Temp not higher than 500, and since it cooled the crack is invisible. It stayed in the curve of the bottom, did not extend up the side...

slumping carved glass

I'm ready to slump some 16" diameter x 1/2" float in which I've carved some designs, as deep as 1/8". I'm wondering how I should alter my slumping schedule to allow for the variation in thickness. Anyone with experience in this? Suggestions? Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

durable wine bottle decoration

The only viable way to put something on the top surface of the bottle, that will resist cutting and be food safe, is to paint/screen print with a food safe paint that can be fired on, or to etch a design. I know of no workable way to put the original label on the top surface that will offer the dura...

"bubble" panel

I have a customer who has asked me to reproduce a glass panel for an old china cabinet. The original is 12" x 36", 1/8" glass. The panel has a sagged pattern, basically two diamond shapes down the center (each 9" point-to-point), with the other sagged shapes semi-circular (5"...

Thanks for all of the input. Using a yellow transparent paint on float might be the easiest way to go, though I'm not sure how the green edges of the float will look with the yellow. The idea of fusing a couple of layers of clear over a thin layer of yellow occurred to me, and, except for the possib...

My thought is that if the stain will give the yellow I need, it might be better to use that rather than the colored glass, as the carved image would show better. If the carving is done from the stained side, the frosted image would be a definite contrasting frosted design against a yellow background...

Brad, I found the old format to be much easier/quicker to go through. A quick scroll down the page allowed me to skip threads I had no interest in, and it was easy to find new comments on older threads. I find myself not visiting the current forum as often since the change, just because of the time ...

yellow glass table top

I have a customer who would like a small, yellow, glass table top, 3/8" thick. After suggesting I make a piece (finished size, 16"x34"), she has expressed an interest in having a design carved into the underside, thus making the requirement a TRANSPARENT yellow. I've read some discuss...

dust protection

I'm curious.....Has anyone considered using an air-supplied hood instead of a dust mask? This assumes an air source, so this would only apply to those with a decent size compressor. I do a lot of large-scale sand-carved work, and work with a positive air-flow helmet/hood. The constant flow of air th...

Thanks again for the suggestions. I'll have to investigate. For this particular job, though, I think I'm going to pass: the customer wants something YESTERDAY, and didn't even understand, or want to, why I wouldn't do 3/8" carved ANNEALED glass for a shower enclosure. Lawsuits I DON'T need. Mark

Thanks for everyone's help. Bert, what you've suggested is what I was looking for, a way to color the already tempered panels without going above strain point. I've investigated getting panels tempered after firing enamels and blasting, but no one around here will do it. They say the chances of blow...

coloring tempered glass

I have a prospective customer who wants etched and colored panels for a shower enclosure. I'm wondering about any technical problems that would prevent one from firing paints/stains onto tempered float glass. I'm looking at doing panels using 1/4" or 3/8" float, approximate panel sizes 28&...

Kevin, thanks for your help. I'd be interested in the contact re the controller. I'm thinking of changing the top element layout of one of my kilns for more even heat distribution, and adding a controller would be another definite improvement. If you wouldn't mind sharing your bottle schedule, I'd b...

Kevin, thanks for your input. You are correct about the folds in the completed shade, however those don't appear until after the slump is complete, so that added thickness is "after the fact". This third attempt WAS with a thicker bottle, thus a thicker overall blank. My bottles are all pu...

Firing schedule/problems

I'm the crazy person trying to make lampshades out of wine bottles. The success of my second attempt had me thinking(?) that I had it figured out (successful 2nd attempt @ http://www.glassimpressions.net/bottles.htm ). My third attempt ended up like the first failure: several pieces, apparent therma...
