Craft Shows
Bert, Sorry to be so slow on the draw but it got busy here even in the off season. The show I attended was with Paradise City in North Hampton. Their web site said the tables were $750 up and that's what the artists I spoke with said. It was a nice show in a good location with plenty of motel servic...

Bubbles
Brock is correct; he always is so listen when he speakes. My response to bubbles, as with some other problems, is that it's best to avoid them rather than trying to fix them. When I flat fuse I found that the thickness of the piece as well as my firing schedule both acted to cause, or defeat bubbles...

Pot melt
Steve, I'd like to see your kiln! Are you really able to make 1600 in less than an hour? Hate to have your electric bill. But that's a good answer. I know that my kiln doesn't go much faster than 900 an hour but I don't like going that fast. You know my process, and within that process I usually go ...

Flat Shelves
Brad, Your comments are well taken but you might wish to talk to some other kiln suppliers before you make blanket statements about them. Evenheat and Paragon both said they had been aware of the problems glass crafters were having and had put their supplier on notice, all to no avail. They were buy...

kiln shelf problems
It's a sad commentary, these kiln shelves. It's the result of sending our jobs to countries where labor is cheap and quality doesn't exist. I went through the very same issue about a year ago when I bought two new shelves from Evenheat. Bubbles the size of grapefruits. I put a level on the shelf and...

Devit
Lauri, I've heard all that before and would agree with part two except for the way the devit showed up. It's really strange. It is on the lower half of the piece (upper as you look at the finished product) while the rest is clean! That tells me that the glass in the bottom of the mold, which was in ...

Casting Devit
Hi folks. Sometime back I cast an original sculpture of a dolphin, 10" high that devitrified pretty badly. I used Spectrum series 96 glass in a pot melt to get some transparency. I went up slow from Room Temp to process which was 1700, held for 2 hours and then cooled through annealing. I suspe...

New England Craft Show, Blahhhhh
Hi folks. I've been watching something happen, at least in New England, and I wondered if any of you had seen the same thing. Perhaps I'm too cynical for my own good, but here it is anyway. Last weekend I visited a "High End" craft show which the promoters said was for top of the line craf...

Critique
Wow! I never expected this much response or the in depth thinking. Folks, I really do appreciate it. Enough of you said I should have larger pictures and I'm going to take that to my site designer today; thank you. And to those of you with nice things to say about my work, my ego appreciates it as w...

Critique
Thanks folks, I appreciate the comments. I've spent a lot of time and money getting this thing running and I needed to hear from pros about how it looks.
Thanks again,

Critique?
From time to time I ask for critique from this board, in spite of the obvious risks, because I have come to trust kiln crafters and value their opinion. Well, this is one of those requests. I have a new web site at http://www.angelantics.net which I've worker really hard on and would appreciate your...

The Stands
Sorry, I forgot to say that the stands are from Dick Kolpak and can be seen at http://www.ironwoodmetal.com He makes each one to order. You need to decide which of his you like and tell him the exact size as well as the thickness. Takes about a week but his work is excellent everytime. I have a bunc...

Pot melt detail
For those kind souls who asked for a detail shot, here it is. http://userpages.prexar.com/revjerry/Otherworldly%20detail.jpg Something in Keith Cummings book got me going on these some time back but I had to be away from them for awhile. Had time to play and it's a good thing. Our season is on the h...

Havin' fun with pot melts
I've been playing again and am pretty happy with these pot melts. They measure 18" and are about as big as I can go given my kiln size; guess it's time to buy another one. Sorry you can't read the description cards. You'll just have to guess at how much I sell these things for. http://userpages...

Wax Sculpting
One of the problems glass casters have is developing an original model to cast. When we make the choice to fabricate that model in wax, there's good news and bad. (Cut to the chase) I've recently found a formula for making wax as easy to work with as clay and wondered, first, if any of you may have ...

cranberry color
And you are right; that color doesn't exist, or, at least I can't find it. We mixed a couple colors of Thompson's Enamel together to get it. One of their transparent pinks with some cobalt and silver pixie dust. It's a crap shoot. Sometimes you can get away with mixing frit and sometimes you cant. M...

Blue Dragon
Patti,
I work with Spectrum series 96, not because it's so much better, but because I understand it and can predict what it does.
The border is series 96 blue opaque on a white base and fired to 1500 for a full fuse with rounded edges.

I agree with the post about firing higher for longer. When I do things that big I go to 1700 and hold for 2 hours to allow all the glass out of the pot and all the bubbles to melt. Regardless of how you try, there will be surface imperfections but they go away on a second firing with some devit spra...

opinion
Nice work. I'd dump the brown background in the photo in favor of white paper. Your background is distracting and draws my eye away from the beauty of the piece. Is the wire you used silver? If so, I'd try to get a smaller gauge OR not try to mimic the piece itself. Straight lines would have been be...

Cutting Shelves
Tom, That's exactly what I did, but for a different reason. I CAN'T find a flat kiln shelf. When I flat fuse I get grapefruit sized bubbles. By chance I had one shelf for a large L&L pottery kiln that behaved itself and I cut it down so it would fit into my Paragon front loader. Solved the probl...
