Thanks for the replies. The Kiln I use is a HotStart by Skutt, and I have not taken the Kiln to very high temps (never above 1500F), so I am not sure that temps are my problem. btw: you're supposed to condition your skutt the first time by firing it very hot, 1650 or so for a while. you'd get a lon...

Re: Pot melt support
ceramic or porcelin tiles cut on a wet saw. lots cheaper (or free) to get chipped ones from a tile store than shelves.Lorelei wrote:How does one cut the kiln shelves into those strips? And is there anything else I could use to support the pot?

Re: Pot Melts
Some time back, my Wife took a glass painting class. In that class she learned that firing the glass, typically float, would leave texture on the back unless you did something to prevent it. And that "something" was a 1/4" layer of TALC. What I do that works so well is to sift a thic...

Re: texturing stained glass
I need to texture stained glass to a granite texture for a restoration/repair job. I was thinking of slumping over a mold made of paste whiting or plaster of paris? Any thoughts on this? Liam if it's a repair job on something with granite texture, are you aware you can buy granite textured stained ...

your computer does not have redundancy by doing dual writing to 2 main disc. So why should a kiln company have to build in redundancy standard. Now optional redundancy is a whole new issue. Custom built redundancy is availble from Jen-Ken no problem, Paragon to some extent, and Skutt to a much less...

I'm with you Sara, I try real hard to make sure that everything has a finished smooth professional finish. Have you tried the wood stick things that burn out? I've had a few of my friends tell me it works but haven't tried it myself yet. Another beading buddy and I will probably try it this weekend...

Plus, your shelves act as heat sinks, so they retain more heat the more you stack them. They are, in turn, acting as resonant heat cavities - bouncing heat between them. I think, if you observe, that you will see that pieces between shelves tend to be fusing hotter for longer. That is, the temperat...

Re: Colored Glass Stands ???
I am thinking of painting my stands different colors to match my glass. Has anyone tried this? Is it a futile thought? Is black just best? I don't really have a lot of time to mess up, so I'm thinking I should just stick with black and experiment later, but I just think it might look really good. s...

I haven't yet figured out how much my client will spend or how elaborate a look he wants. He started out to look in to a stained glass window, but they told him that it couldn't be sealed to the weather. I know that I can do some sort of art glass that comes out sealed. that'd be news to a lot of s...

Well, it couldn't all be good. My relay switching is still having an effect. Not as bad as before but it slows everything down. The kiln is not between the computer and the house. Can I put something between the kiln and the computer so the relay switch doesn't affect it? A steel plate, or would th...

Hi there - Thank you all for this great input - although it should have been obvious I didn't consider the level issue - the garage does have a slight slope so will definitely need to be able to level the beast. Looking forward to moving from the research/planning phase to the execution phase! - Fr...

Re: WBS: Water is heavy and I am lazy.
How about a hose running from your house supply, supplying a header tank similar to a toilet flushing system? As the water level goes down, the float valve dips and it refills to the 'full' level. No pumps, just gravity. what happens when one forgets to turn off the hose and the overflow bucket fil...

Re: Smoke Detectors
Okay, folks, down the wall it comes. It's already on the wall but pretty high up. Appreciate the advice and I'll let you know what happens. Jerry note that they don't work if they are mounted too far down the wall. heat and smoke rises, and current code is that wired detectors have to be mounted to...

Re: 120v versus 240v kiln
I checked the archives but can't find the answer to my question. I have been told that a 120v kiln is more of a draw on elecricity than a 240v, and that the 240v is more efficient. Are there any electricians our there who can answer my question. I have a 240v now and was thinking of getting a 120v ...
