UPS ships my stuff but I pack the glass well, so it's their responsibility if it breaks. I insure for retail cost to cover the bother of replacing broken work. Mail Boxes Etc. and their ilk don't know how to pack delicate stuff, and if it does break, UPS will usually disallow the claim because of in...

Topic: Pricing for restaurants vs. galleries?

I'd like to start a restaurant in my dreams- the reality is too much like work. Keiko- your wholesale price is just that- I assume the restuarants will be buying a quantity of your work and will qualify for the w/s price. Any publicity you get is a bonus. And their finances are their concern, not yo...

Leslie- The paper is a pain in the butt- but the galleries need it to help sell your work, and the collectors need it to help them justify and explain the purchase. They really are interested in your MSW and everything else you did to bring you to this point. For example, I just bought a small piece...

I cut on an old hardwood door- no cushioning, sweeps clean. Masonite works too and is cheap.

Easy: glue it.

Difficult: put the bowl over a mold, put the leaf on the bowl, bring slowly to tack fuse temp and anneal.

Yo Geo- try searching for "ceramic kiln" first- this topic comes up frequently. Generally for fusing, you want top elements. Casting should be no problem in a deeper side-fired ceramic kiln. The compromise is a deeper fusing kiln with top and side (and maybe even bottom) elements that you ...

I find this casual attidude toward damage and loss disturbing. "Sorry, your work just moved off its pedestal and smashed on the floor." "Well that's ok, it was only glass and I'll be happy to send you another one." We should not have to be concerned about the gallery's insurance ...

Re the "bump"- I've moved those family groups having a reunion in my booth by being busy dusting or re-arranging stock. "Excuse me, can I just reach that bowl for a second?" Make them very aware of your presence. Space invaders. I see a WarmGlass rugby team in the making. Or a da...

I don't understand why you'd want to get involved in that- I keep the tax separate; I'm just collecting a state-mandated tax (and not getting paid to do it either!). If customers complain, I tell them to vote next time (no I really don't tell them that, I say I'm just collecting it). And on a high t...

rj- you have to dam the strips pretty well- 1" of glass is going to look for gaps to leak out of. I've used fiberboard and cut up shelf dams but prefer my stainless steel troughs- line with fiberpaper, plug the ends and go. As to firing, you can go up pretty fast. I hold at slump temp (1240) fo...
