Whenever I've dropped off work at a consignment gallery, I have two hard copies of the inventory list and ask the person who receives them (usually the manager or owner) to sign for them onthe copy that I keep for my own records. I keep this copy in a file folder, along with each list of payments I'...

There's some good information about pricing work in Wendy Rosen's book, "Crafting as a Business." There are zillions of formulas out there for pricing work used by artists. Basically, for a commissioned piece, I charge more than I would for a "spec" piece I made. There's a lot mo...

Thanks guys!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys! I took the housing off the bottom of the saw to check the things you suggested and found that it was completely caked with ground glass. I cleaned it out and the saw now works again. It must have dried in there or something since I haven't used it in so long. Many t...

My Paragon controller also makes all kinds of noises. My favorite part is the whine it makes during certain parts of the firing cycle.

The clicking is completely normal.

What's up with my tile saw?

I have a tile saw that I bought from Habor Freight. The brand is Chicago. I haven't used it in over a month...maybe 2 months. I turned it on and I could hear the power come on but the blade didn't turn. I turned if off and checked to see if anything like a chunk of glass might be blocking it by rota...

To that extent, I wish more people would share there "Secrets" Not to copy but, so that others may learn from and enrich the art that we do. We all know the basics of fusing. Its going beyond the basics that makes it great. If I have technique I consider secret I can use it and continue t...

Differences between various Thompson's products as medium

Thanks to Bert, I got my first lesson on using an airbrush yesterday. So much fun! I've been looking on the net for suppliers of Klyr Fire and noticed some other products on the Thompson's site: Agar and Holding Agent. I looked through the archives and old archives and couldn't find an answer to thi...

If you can afford to do it, go for it! At the age of 37, I left a 15 year career in high tech where I made a lot of money but was completely miserable. 11 years later, I'm much happier and more relaxed than I ever was in my former career. Things aren't always easy being self-employed, but it's nice ...

I haven't taught classes out of my home studio because of liability issues. If you decide to do this, make sure you find insurance that covers teaching. My business liability insurance specifically excludes teaching; I don't know if this is common practice. I know of some places that rent out firing...

I suspect that this policy won't do. Generally shows that require you do show proof of insurance want proof of some kind of business liability insurance. Available coverage and insurers vary from state to state. I pay about $330 annually for my policy. I was unable to acquire business insurance from...

There was a discussion about this about a week ago...you need a glue with some give. I always used E6000 when i made mirrors, but I designed them with opaque areas so that I could put the glue there and it wouldn't show through the glass.

I've sold cufflinks to men...for a while they were really popular here.

I've sold bracelets to men and certain of my pendants. Men also wear beads, at least here in CA, if they're on a short cord/chain and not too bright.

Men also wear rings if they're big and not too bright.

aloha geri -- are you looking for a 4-sided stand that revolves? i have seen a wooden stand, 4 sides, wire "dowels" maybe 3 rows high, so folded earring cards slip over the wire. the wire is actually thicker than that used for a wire coat-hanger. not too bendable. i think this style i've ...

For several months now, I've been looking for a very specific earring display stand. I've done a number of different searches on the Internet and this is the closest thing I've been able to find for what I'm looking for. http://www.storefixtures2000.com/WireRacks/wire_jewelry_displayer.htm What I'd ...

Either you just read The Davinci Code or you should. It is a fun read and about "the goddess" and other pagan symbology. Heh! Funny you should mention this book. I finished reading it for the second time last night. Wonderful book, full of mystery and art history, not to mention some alte...

Yes. Really. I had a customer lick a barrette. She didn't believe me when I told her my barrettes were made from glass; she thought they were plastic, so she licked one of them to check. And then she didn't buy it. But before she licked it, probably at least 100 other people had touched it. GROSS! W...
