Geri - My display cases are glass. None of my work is exposed since it's silver, gold, and glass jewelry. In fact I use locking cases. Table covering is black. All I'm really looking to do is make it look a little better, finish the tent a bit. Color to me would be preferable over the stark white l...

Rant and a few laughs...read at your own risk

Over the weekend, I participated in the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Although this is supposedly one of the top food shows in the country, the level of sophistication about contemporary art and craft among the attendees is not particularly high. I do this show, despite the high booth cost, terrible heat,...

Re: Concealing White Tent Walls

Question for those of you using EZ Up, Caravan etc. What are you using to conceal those bright white tent walls? I'm looking at draperies, sheers etc. Not finding the perfect something yet to mellow those things out. thanks jerry Just curious, Jerry...why do you want to conceal the walls? I've trie...

If you have received this email and truly believe it's a scam, you can report it. I found two Internet scam "watchdog" sites: http://www.scamwatch.com http://www.scambusters.org I know nothing about either of these groups other than that I found them when I did a search on "internet s...

Bert, I'm stumped. I get the X-in-a-box on messages I've posted on boards on this site even when I'm not the moderator. I wonder if it had to do with the settings I used when setting up my account...Hmmmm. Have you looked at those for you account? If that's not it, this would get a good question for...

That promise to sort the work by size is certainly my main criteria for giving someone $150 to keep my work. I hope no one has actually taken this guy up on this. Has anyone emailed him to ask him WHY they should participate in this scheme? I just love that he has a yahoo email address. Too funny! G...

What do you do the day before a show?

Off-board I've discussed this topic with different folks in different media about what they do the day before a show setup. Now I'm curious to hear what you all do to prepare yourself the day before a show... I do as little as possible, try to relax and definitely don't do any work. If it's not done...

Hey how do you delete a post? Bert - See at the top of the post where it says "Quote" and "Edit" and then a little x in a box. Click on the little x in the box to delete your post. It will prompt you to make sure that's what you want to do. Click on Yes and bingo, your post will...

At the outdoor shows I've done, people rarely use any kind of lighting. Sunlight is generally sufficient, unless you're under some kind of heavy duty canopy or a dark canopy. There are battery pack things (I can't remember what they're called) that you can buy at places like CostCo which you charge ...

Dani - Here's some wind advice...hope it helps. Set up your booth so in the event of really strong winds it's possible for you to remove the top. I've done a couple of shows near the water where we were having gusts up to 60MPH and the only way to deal with it was to take the top off the booth right...

Thanks everyone, that's a ton of help. We have some large lead weights we can use since this particular festival doesn't allow poking into the turf. Geri, do you use carpet at your outdoor fairs? I'll have to check as this event takes place in a park and I don't know if they want their grass smashe...

Thanks, Geri, you've given me a wealth of info.... starting with calling them "canopies" to the correct size! The 9 x 10 was quoted to me by our local rental company, but for $150 a day, I thought I'd buy something, even if I only use it once! Doesn't that sound expensive for a rental? I ...

Re: Tent information wanted

Is there a good source for used festival tents... standard 9 x 10? Thanks. Dani, you've got me confused. I've never seen or heard of a 9x10 canopy. Maybe never having seen them is a CA thing. Mine is a standard 10x10 which fits in a standard 10x10 space that we have at most of the shows here, altho...

A low key approach is to say something like "hi, I'm Lauren, the artist who made these pieces. If I can help you or answer a question, please let me know." Then they'll ask you if they're plastic or resin. LOL. But seriously, that's one I learned from the sculpture/jewelry prof I studied f...

I can't help but laugh at these posts since I've had the same experiences in dealing with the public. People don't read signs/tags often and when they do they're sometimes not even sure what they mean anyway. LOL. Don't give up! Get used to it. Some of these incidents give you great stories to enter...

sooo funny! This whole thread I mean. I just finished a show where I sold..*drum roll* ONE piece. And THAT was cold flat work. *sigh* I had many people complimenting, but no one buying. (NEVER do a 4th of July show where they have a parade. It's too soon after they've paid the mortgage and their bi...

Cindy - Los Gatos is about 5 minutes from where I live in San Jose. It's not even verging on being close to the LA area (it's 6-7 hours away if you drive up 5...longer if you take 101). I suspect the gallery you want to see there is Studio 42 or 45 or some other number. Fused glass hasn't done well ...

It's hot in CA, too

Cindy -

I don't know about S.CA., but it's hot up here in N.CA. I think it's hit 105F around here in the last week and it's still hot...It's so hot that SF isn't going to have any fog tonight.

Have a good trip to S.CA.

This is an interesting question. The answer is that there's probably as many methods of pricing as there are artists. So much of what you can actually charge for something has to do with what the market will bear. That means that what you're selling, where you're selling it, and to whom you are sell...
