Al, Bob, Stuart, Thanks for all the input. Although I won't be taking the class until May, I have been doing some intense "self educating" for the last few weeks (mostly here at warmglass.com), and I'm currently waiting for "Contemporary Warm Glass" to arrive from Bullseyeconnect...

Kiln Size VS Convenience & Efficiency

I'm looking to buy my first (and for now ONLY) kiln, and I have narrowed it down to two. The Skutt GM1414 (Oval) for it's size to cost advantage, or the GM22CS (Clamshell) for it's elgant design, and convenient access. (and higher efficiency?) Not having the practical experience of the majority of t...

Thanks Bert! I'm in Connecticut. Would you happen to have any suggestions on where I might find a company that does tempering that I might use when the time comes?

So then I guess the "safest" thing to do would be to place the art glass behind a clear sheet of tempered safety glass (with a space in between) if used in a door where it would be at a height where someone might fall against it? I guess the sinks are just an unavoidable risk?

Cynthia / Els, Thanks for the encouragement. Coincidentally, as Barbara happened to mention being a "Mechanical Engineer" . . . well it turns out that I have a BSME from the University of Connecticut. I've been working in the aircraft industry for over 15 years, and am interested in making...

Nope, I guess that didn't work. Well anyway, I was trying to describe a blank with a central square sitting on top of mold, with four trapezoids extending out from the four edges of the square so that those four trapezoids would slump down against the sides of the mold. The central square section wo...

Barbara,

Thanks for your input. Just as a clarification, this is the shape that I was thinking of for the blank (if I can make inserting an image into this post work!) .

Tempered Art Glass?

OK . . . one other major question for today from someone new to all of this. I was advised that if I ever got into making sinks (or other architectural pieces) that I should have good liability insurance for the obvious reasons. In my web travels, I notice a few large glass companies that do archite...

Brock,

I know that hot glass is a bit off-topic for this forum, but are you familiar with the Roll-Up technique? I'm wondering how it is that they can manage to fuse the closing edge in the glory hole without losing the shape of the cylinder?

Fuse, Slump, Fuse?

Hi everyone. I'm just getting started with warm glass (I'm taking the kiln fired glass class at Snow Farm in MA this May), and I've been doing a LOT of reading / research about this subject on the web. When I came across the Aussie Roll-Up technique, it started me wondering about the limitations of ...
