Paragon Pearl 22 black soot
Hi, I have a Paragon Pearl that is probably at least 12 years old. In the past year or so, it has started dropping very fine black gritty soot on my glass during firings. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and whether they know the cause? At first I thought it was from the ag...

Re: Hot-Line Shelf primer issue and high temp advice?
Wow, at 1 part kiln wash to 2 parts water that must be a very thick mixture!

Hot-Line Shelf primer issue and high temp advice?
Been doing a lot of combing lately at 1700 degrees. Been using BE kilnwash, at least 9-10 coats, and there have been a couple of times the BE kiln wash has completely stuck to the glass and, in two cases, the glass then stuck to the shelf and cracked. I am also finding that sometimes it can be near ...

Re: The screw on running pliers.
Brad, yep, that is what I have always done. I just assumed that when I actually press to cut that the give in the plastic covers was such that the right amount of pressure was applied. That being said, I am now going to advance the screw!

Re: Face Shields for Combing Glass
Thanks, Brad. That is like the one I have. Wanted to get one for the Art Glass Center and when I saw you can order them with a green shade on the inside started to wonder if that was a better choice. I like the idea of separate glasses.

Re: The screw on running pliers.
Looks like I have been doing it wrong for 20 years! What I thought I was told was to put the jaws on your glass then tighten the screw, then back off a quarter turn. I suppose it makes more sense to advance it a quarter turn but this has worked for me for all these years and therefore conclude that ...

Face Shields for Combing Glass
Hi, I need to purchase a face shield for eye safety while combing at 1700 degrees. I have a gold one and am wondering whether additional eye protections is needed. I have seen that you can purchase the gold coated ones with an inside green coating. I also wonder whether wearing didymium glasses with...

Re: Glass not filling void in lost wax technique
Straw sounds like a good plan. I meant to answer your comment about the float glass. I am making "energy" eggs, a variation on an old Chinese tradition. The idea is that the egg sits in water and absorbs negative energy which transfers to the water and is dumped. Lots of negative energy ar...

Re: Glass not filling void in lost wax technique
Thanks, Kevin, for the eye candy, beautiful work! Many years ago I heard the Higuchi's speak at Corning and bought a bag of the plaster they use, just found it in a bin the other day. I hope I can ask for some sprue advice. I know the concept, but not sure how to use one. When I search what comes up...

Glass not filling void in lost wax technique
After not casting in years, I am trying to get back into it. I am doing a basic drip casting from a flower pot reservoir of soda lime glass into a mold created using the lost wax method. I am just trying to make a simple shape, a chicken size egg, pointy end down. One of the problems I am having is ...

Re: Stabilize kiln brick in GL top?
Thanks for your response! I was so anxious to get on with this I went to the HW store yesterday and got those type of screws. I tried to shove some cement in the holes but doubt that I was very successful. At the moment the bricks are no longer sagging and the piece that dropped out is in place. I t...

Stabilize kiln brick in GL top?
Hi, I have an old Paragon GL 24 and a chunk of brick fell out of the front of the top. I decided that I would cement it back in and then realized the whole top is sagging. In the kiln housing there are already holes through which screws could have been added that would have gone into that section of...

Re: Two layer vase
Thanks for the responses. I am using single layers, want to keep the weight down. I also thought about trying to keep the two pieces from sticking together, best I could think of was adding a layer of thin fiber paper, though I thought that could be a challenge to remove and sort of still think this...

Re: Two layer vase
Brad, do you mean pre-fuse each piece separately? I really want them to be two separate pieces so that they each can "do their own thing" when they fall. 4 hour hold? Will give that a try. Thanks!

Two layer vase
I have tried a couple times to form a vase on a floral former using two separate, unfired square layers of glass, put at 90 degrees to each other. The design is that the inner layer is transparent and the outer layer is opaque. The transparent is a little larger so that it will "peak" out ...

Compatibility Question
First, this question has absolutely nothing to do with any price increase or availability of glasses. I have a large quantity of Spectrum stained glass from "way back when" when I first started doing glass. I am doing open face castings with a bunch of kids and I wondered if this glass mig...

Re: Experience casting pot melt into molds?
Hi, Cynthia, I have been thinking about dripping glass into both a "plaster" mold and also into a pre-formed depression in sand/bentonite. I have a couple of questions to try and "smarten up" before doing this. I was going to either use one of the R&R mixes or maybe mix #1 po...

Re: enamels at fusing temperatures
Bert, That is gorgeous. So glad you posted the closeup of the surface. Translucency is exactly what I am looking for. I want depth of visually overlapping colors that are on different surfaces. I had not considered working on float, but could certainly do that. Can you please tell me what is the sig...

Can the ceramic stains that you are using be used at full fuse temperatures?
