Thanks, Cynthia.

When I first looked at the mess I was dumbfounded.

After I had a good night's sleep, I figured it had to be an annealing problem.

My Glass Exploded

Just a little history: I had an attempted combing that wasn't completed so I decided to use it as a design element. Bottom layer clear; next black opal; the failed combing and design elements to tie in with the failed combing. All glass was System 96. I fired this according my trusted firing program...

Kathy, I fired the thicker copper (from Michael's) between two layers of glass -- bottom layer is Spectrum 96 Black with clear 96 cap with Micro Pearl Luster #650. This copper turmed red and the luster is pretty neat. As I said, I didn't draw an object -- just spread the mica on the copper. I mixed ...

Kathy, I'm not Jackie, but I was experimenting with the Pearl Ex micas from Michael's. I did large and small pieces of copper with all the Pearl Ex micas. These experiments were not "pictures" just blotches of paint to see their reaction with the copper. I probably could take some pictures...

Mira,

Can't help you with programming your controlller, but you hit the nail on the head with annealing temps for System 96.

I hold at 955 then take the kiln down 150 dph to 700.

Love your work. I also love the stands. Can't believe you made them yourself.

Let us know when you add more pictures.

Thanks, Charlie.

I had the tool soak before starting, but did not put it back into the water between combings. I'll take your advice.

Just saw this on Crestmolds.com

http://www.firedartsclassroom.com/GCSem1.html

This might be helpful for those in no man's land and would like some sort of learning device on fusing glass.

If you have Brad's book, turn to pages 80 and 81 for pictures on combing.

I've found out it's not quite as simple as it looks and sounds.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Hi All, After reading the comments, I thought the answer was that the copper that turned black was very close to the edge. My fish that turned nice reddish color was centered between two layers of float. This theory is kind of blown now by looking at Jackie's tiles. The copper in the tiles looks as ...

Karen, So you agree to take only one pass at a time and try to either bend the prongs on the fork or better I think I might get one of those hooks which Brad shows in his book. I was disappointed in that not all of the colors were pulled through. I've already got two more set up to do tomorrow. Than...

Deb, If you are going to continue doing stained glass, move all that glass to a separate part of your studio. Start buying COE 90 or 96; stick with one or the other and go from there. Keep them as far apart as possible. I still have glass from my stained glass days and do use it occasionally. Also, ...

OK, Gang. Please no laughing. I posted my three attempts at http://www.picturetrail.com/judyfla Go to the album entitled "combings." Actually, I'm not too disappointed with my first attempts. Two of the pieces #1 & #2 have quite a bit of discoloration/devit but I'll cover those areas w...

Barbara,

It was sandwiched between two layers of double strength float.

I've done this several times with relatively good results until I switched to this thin copper.

The first time (many months ago) I played with copper, I took Tom's suggestion and painted Unique clear on it. After it was fired, I could see the brush marks. I didn't like that. This time I didn't put anything on either thickness. The stuff that turned black is 1 mil (.001 inch). From the samples ...

I'll post the pictures later today.

I volunteer at our local art guild today from 1 - 4 so I didn't have time before my stint at the guild.

I did another one this morning and will post that picture also.

They are much easier and fun to do in my small RapidFire.

I spent yesterday experimenting with things I've always wanted to do but never had the time. First I tried the combing in my RapidFire kiln. I used the bbq fork also and was pleased with the results. In fact, I was so thrilled I immediately set up a bunch of little strips of glass to put into my lar...

My copper turned black

I've experimented with copper (purchased from Michael's) fired between layers of float and have had reasonably good results. However, I thought I'd have better results if I ordered thinner copper from Nimrod Hall. I ordered the thinnest copper they had and did some test runs yesterday. Fired the cop...

Karen, Just took a look at your first attempt at combing and I'm impressed. Question: Do you layer the glasss flat or layer slices on their sides. I have Brad's book and looked at the picture. It looks as though there's solid red at the top and bottom with stripes of some sort in the middle. I guess...
