I believe it was around November of 2003. In that particular issue it did not have a month on the front.

I haven't conducted any tests regarding finding the tin side with the light vs. water. I just take my glass into a dark closet where I keep my light; check all the pieces with the light; stack them tin side down and take them to the kiln. I used to get tin bloom all the time when I first started usi...

You two are not alone. This subject has been discussed over and over but there are always new people joining in and inevitable it will come up again.

There are probably hundreds of posts in the archives regarding the tin side of float.

Susan,

Next time put a little Super Spray on the ground edges after you've cleaned them.

I put Super Spray on all edges I've cut with my ring saw or tile saw after they are washed and dried.

Katia, The UV light for curing glue is not the same wave length for finding the tin side of float. Before I bought the UV lamp to detect the tin side of float, I sort of put a brush full of water on one side of the glass to see how it would flow off the glass. The water will roll off the tin side fa...

Steve,

Lisa Allen had a marvelous picture tutorial in the on-line glass magazine. I followed her instructions (I don't believe they involved a 24-hour schedule) and my pattern bars turn out beautifully.

Try to do a search on Lisa Allen or maybe someone will recall the name of the magazine.

Marla, I agree with Tony regarding the kiln. I don't think it needs any special "packing" to be transported by its present owner to your home. We actually drove to Lakeland to pick up two of our 28" Jen Kens. Randy and Mike loaded them (two separate trips months apart) into the back o...

Ann, I lined the pipe with fiber paper and just filled the pipes with strips of glass. Next time I'll put more clear in the pipes. I didn't have anything flake off the pipes onto the glass though. Like I said, it was fun. Plus, I belong to our local sculptor's group and they are always pushing us fo...

Black Pipe Pattern Bars

Just finished a panel using techniques described by Kevin O'Toole in Glass Craftsman magazine.

No critique necessary. Just sharing what I thought was fun to create.

Duraboard

I just finished reading the thread on duraboard firing. I applied the rigidized on all six sides; let it dry for two days; fired it to 1450. I opened the kiln this morning and the board is all blotchy. Charlie says if it's not white, flip it over and fire it again. I flipped it over and the other si...

Sara,

I checked out the Revolutionary Tile Saw on Gemini's website but it doesn't say this particular saw cuts omni-directional. What's your experience? Also, there's no price on the website.

Sara, Actually I was referring to the new Taurus III(?) It has a separating blade and the way the literature reads, the saw portion can be taken off the stand and used in another location. I was going to order it, but Art Glass House seems to think there may be some bugs  to work out. I believ...

Brock,

I do the same -- into ss and over clay -- over ss and into clay. But like you said, it all depends on the shape. That's why I say there's no hard rules on over and into.

I have a large, gently sloped ss bowl which I slump into all the time and have never had anything stick.

There was a long discussion some time back about saws. Some of us who do intricate cuts do them with a ring saw. I have a Taurus II and am happy with it. I also have a tile saw. However, if you're cutting pattern bars or any other thick glass, Taurus does not recommend that sort of cutting on this p...

The general rule is to slump over ss and into clay molds. Of course there are always exceptions. A few years ago I made lattice bowls (lots of holes) and always slumped them into large ss bowls and never had a problem. There are plenty of clay molds which are meant to be used as drapers (slumping ov...

Lauri,

High fire is putting lots of compatible glass in a saucer and firing it "high." The high temperature melts all the glass together and makes interesting patterns.

Hope this clarifies.

I think everyone has covered your questions.

On some controllers the CPL will flash, then 5.52 (meaning the amount of time it took for your firing cycle) then 256 which is the present temperature in the kiln.

Hope this helps.
