I think it was probably the ancient Mesopotamians, around 1500 BC. But don't worry, I'm sure there's someone alive who will claim to have invented it.

Small molds take longer to slump than large ones. In general, you should keep the slumping temperature below 1300F (some people never go above 1200, but for small items 1275 is fine). You want to vary the TIME you spend soaking at the temperature. It's not unusual to have to soak 1/2 hour or longer ...

I think Pete VanderLaan sells it, but not sure. He's the moderator over at craft web. Amy Pete handles (or at least used to handle, I know his wife still uses it) a competitive product, which I believe is less expensive and said to be comparable to Hxtal: http://www.guadalupeglass.com/Guadalupe%20G...

Brad, generally I would agree with you. There's something different about this occurance. I purged every cache file on my PC trying to make it work. Purged everthing, history as well. Oh well. Back to the techy day job. Well, hmmm.. That sound you hear is me scratching my head. Don't have the sligh...

Brad - anybody. Please try that link again and let me know. It works for me. The reason it would work for you and not for others is that the photo is already cached on your PC from when you originally looked at the site. Since we haven't seen it, it's not cached on our PC, but when we try to view i...

I noticed that with this link, Jerry, they actually come up with a page that says "image referrals not allowed." That's a lot more considerate than places like Yahoo, which just refuse to work properly.

I would agree with Ron. That said, there are a number of contaminants that can impact elements. Most of these are more likely to happen in ceramic kilns than in glass kilns, and most result in degradation of the elements, not in causing the element to sag. Here's a url that has some info about eleme...

Despite what you've been told, I would refuse flat rather than try to reslump in the original mold. Assuming a bowl-shaped mold, if you refire to 1400, the glass will slip down the sides and you will probably get some buckling and such in the bottom. The shape will definitely change. Refiring to fla...

Virtually all sheets are compatible with themselves, so if you're using only sheet, you shouldn't have to worry about compatibility.

We are having it. It will be in November at Bullseye's new Resource Center facility. The exact dates aren't set yet, but I would expect entries to be due in late August/early September. It's not too early to start your work for the exhibition. Last year's information is here (but this year's will ha...

IMNSHO, nothing beats a well prepared kiln shelf. Brock I don't know, if you use nothing doesn't the glass stick to the shelf? Seriously, I would agree that a well-prepared kiln-washed kiln shelf may give you the smoothest bottom surface, provided that your firing schedule is slow and low...

At the risk of being out-Googled, here's what I hope is a simpler explanation. Annealing is the process of slowly and carefully cooling glass so that stress is removed. Tempering is a process of rapidly cooling glass so that stress remains in a specific pattern. One of the characteristics of tempere...

Any pottery place will have element pins. Or you can order them from any kiln or element manufacturer.

I've always repinned my elements without reheating them. I just do so very carefully and slowly. I would think that the only time you'd need to reheat is if the elements are really distorted; I try to catch them before they get that bad.

To be fair to Skutt, Barbara, the controller in question does not require the use of its automatic features, nor does it assume that all glasses or firings are the same. It is somewhat similar to a microwave with a button for "popcorn" -- in neither case do you have to use the button, you ...

Re: bottle glass

Anybody tried casting with bottle glass? How was it? Franklin Though it's not exactly what you've asked about, the Clean Washington Center has done a study of using bottle glass for blowing and casting. The results weren't very good, with extra cleaning time and compatibility issues with cullet fro...
