Many galleries have the nasty habit of not paying consignment artists when pieces have sold. Instead they invest your money buying other artist's work. Often a lack of communication can mean that they are not in a hurry to discuss payment. I have a friend who encounters this scene often. After a per...

Bless you Bob. I think you just expressed with sublime purity the difference between technique and artistry. Technique survives without aristry, but artistry stands alone. Can one copy artistry? Doubtful. That is why I find this debate, like the art and craft debate intersting but perhaps moot ( I ...

Re: To Inc., LLC. or sole propriority???

When I set up my glass studio as a business one of the things I was most concerned about was the shear liability of selling something made of glass. Given the litegious nature of our society these days and the shear number of ambulence chasing lawyers out there, I was, and still am concerned about ...

Lisa I would subscribe to Crafts Report and American Craft magazines. The most successful gallery artists do the wholesale shows, Rosen and ACC. Doing these shows costs thousands of dollars, but pays off for people doing really good work. If it were as simple as making a few phone calls, I don't thi...

Here is an artilcle about a glass maker who uses intentional knock offs to create something new and interesting. He is the only glass maker to be included in the Whitney Biennial so he has serious "art cred." http://www.nytimes.com/2003/04/11/arts/design/11SMIT.html?ex=1051323061&ei=1...

Any ideas for liability insurance covering craft shows? Is there a way to compare companies online? Who do you use? Thanks, marc Call your local insurance agent and tell him/her that you need Manufacturers and Contractors Liability insurance. Mine is for 2,000,000 max and covers me to, from, and at...

It's also clear that people want to learn from experienced teachers. But does a teacher have to have greater than 5 years of experience with a particular technique to make them "worthy" teachers? Tony Tony I don't think there are any hard rules here. If you are a fast study and have put i...

Re: Teaching Technique vs. Creative Process

I So, I put myself out there...have at me :-) - Paul This time I'm in agreement with you. You probably know more and teach more about the creative process than you are aware. For me, a big point of this board or of teaching a class is to inspire people to spend thousands of hours figuring out what ...

It's quite possibly devit, especially if you ground the edges or cut the pieces out with a ring saw.

If the edges are ground, it is snall glass particles which always read white. Grind to a finer grit before fiiring.

I have taken classes. First and foremost with Judith and Kevin at Vitrum, with Brock and Avery, with Bob Leatherbarrow, with Roger Thomas. With the exception of my first classes with Judith, in every class I have taken I learned some things that were new to me and did some things that I had already...

Re: Teaching

I believe there is a legitmate case to be made that a proprietary technique (i.e. developed or significantly enhanced by an individual) is intellectual property and re-teaching it, without bringing meaningful added value of your own, is unethical. This past weekend I taught a powder wafer class. It...

What specifically happens to kiln wash during full fuse processing that renders it unsuitable, or at least of questionable value, as a separator for subsequent firings? Re: Need insite on fusing large multi-layer piece for outdoo

The local Art Development Association in my town contacted me about fusing a center piece for an outdoor glass, tile, and brick installation. What they want is an 18 inch diameter disc consisting of layers of clear and dichroics on a dark base glass. This piece is going to be in the ground on a spe...

If it was only ethical to teach a technique that one developed one's self, there wouldn't be many teachers out there. Klaus would have the burden of being the only pattern bar teacher and Narcissus would have to be the painter of light, I mean with light. I went to Pilchuck and learned kiln casting....

What specifically happens to kiln wash during full fuse processing that renders it unsuitable, or at least of questionable value, as a separator for subsequent firings? Cliff Cliff I'm not a techie, but the kaolin goes through a shift at 1400ºF that causes it to deposit scum on subsequent firings.

I am certain this is the proper place to post this. We are participants in one of the most ancient, and yet the most futuristic medium there is.
