Can this be done?
I’ve been in a slump lately and searching for direction. I turned to my older sketchbooks and found some great ideas. I have always enjoyed the idea of cubism and it’s play with the concepts of time and many of my earlier drawings are of chairs done in a cubist style with the intention of creati...

rj, I just saw your post on the other board. You also asked about cutting strips. You need a strip cutter for that. It is basically a T-square like tool with a cutter on the end. I don’t cut a lot of strips, but when I do, I use my strip cutter on a drawing board that I can mount on my worktable. ...

Susan, I took a workshop from Doug Randall last year after the WGW in Portland. He demonstrated a technique that he uses which is central to making some of his work. I was very attracted to the process and wanted to explore it more. I questioned Doug and Brock about the legitimacy of me doing so. Th...

I haven't tried hot glue - do you mean the one which is used by crafters with a hot glue gun? Yeah. It burns out at around 700. I use lots of fiber paper so I usually vent my kiln to 1100 or so. Without the paper I would probably vent to around 800. I don't know why you use glue. I need it to hold ...

Wendall, Your glass is so transparent that it will be hard, under any conditions to get the amount of depth that you want. Hard, but I don’t think impossible. You need a good digital camera to take test shots before you commit to slide film. I would use a white background and have it drape down an...

You will get a line. However, you can sprinkle dry kiln wash over the fiber paper and then smooth it out with your hand. The kiln wash will fill in the cracks. It will also leave a very smooth surface. The problem is that if the kiln wash isn’t perfectly smooth, any lines, ridges or uneven surface...

Yes I do end up with some of the glass still stuck to the original hardware. In some cases I cut off the attached edge with a tile saw. Most of the time I usually just make some scores and then break it all off where the stalagtites meet the glass. Because there is always kiln wash on the bottom and...

I put this together in a hurry so please excuse any spelling errors or some of the other weird stuff that happens on "raw" untested sites.

Odd email
I received a very short email from someone who claims to sell retail gifts in North Cyprus. I did a search on their ISP and indeed it is from Cyprus. They are only asking for minimum order and pricing on my candleholders. I realize that the internet allows for such worldwide exposure and opportuniti...

I use a digital to shoot my work, however, none of it is dichro. My camera is a 3.3 megapixal. It works pretty well and I would recommend not getting anything less than that. Once you have that, then lighting is the next biggest factor. That takes a lot of experimentation. Just remember that light b...

Give Marty a call at Centre DeVerre. The link is at the top of the page. You will find him to be a great help. Be sure and have a pencil and a note pad ready because he gives you tons of information. Last year I bought 2 kilns from him. I wanted to buy one large one but he talked me out of it, even ...

Hey Kitty, The next time try putting some of the mica or dicro on the shelf for the melt to fall on to. I did it once with frit, but the colors were ucky, (that is a technical term.) Nice pattern though. There is someone, I don't know who, that opens the kiln and throws on frit. You might want to we...

No, do not kiln wash the pot or the kiln wash will flow into the glass and ruin it. You do need to have a good layer of kiln wash on your shelf and I also kiln wash any furniture that I use to hold up the pot, just in case. Once the pot is cool, lift it out by lifting the glass off the kiln shelf an...
