Just an Historical note(that you have all heard before). Back in the Middle ages (1100-1500) The island of Murano was a CLOSED shop. It was where the very best glass in the world was being done. Any Apprentice KNEW that it was a wonderful, enriching trade, they also knew that it was a life sentance....

I understand the concern, but here's another angle. If I have a super duper casting technique, and I want to keep it to myself, then I don't teach classes. I have some personal issues on pieces though. My problem (still rasslin' with) is concerning a type of piece. A new application of glass, that I...

And for those casters out there. I have found the 350-100 degF range to be critical.

Here's my example. I open the oven at 350, look at the open faced molds. They look fine, no cracks. If I leave it cracked to say 100degF, then look, and they have cracked.

That's all I know.

I'm using a mix of reg candle wax and what's called "Container " wax. It gives me stability up to about 70degF, but is still carveable with a knife. Check a local candle p[llace. I get it from Missouri candle. They're on the web.

Casting mold tip

This kind of hooks with the casting failure thread. I've been working on some long tubes, approx 4" diameter, with a 1 1/4" hole down the middle. I have had lots of probs with the core, falling over, just because of it's lack of thickness. I seem to have it licked. I've started taking a ch...

Wait time vs DIY. Do some research and decide. With DIY, you only have yourself to blame, oh and the electrician, and the relay supplier, and the controller guys... I've bought used kilns and re-built them. Instant gratification, and full knowledge. If/when I build the walk in annealer, I'll do it m...

Re:vaseline; TRhe current answer is NO, it won't. I have no idea where it strikes, but (this batch is still at 950degF) it goes opal. A very nice, slightly green opal, but opal. Do I remember that you are in the NW? If you woirk the phones, you coukld get Spectrum, colored ccullet. Or maybe just a r...

Yep. I've tried 3; New Blue, hunter green and Vaseline. I'll try and get webshots to work and get some pics up. Or I'll post them at Craftweb. The New blue is a copper blue, very nice for thick/thin things. The green is definitely green, but no thick/thin diff. Vaseline is a striking flourescent gre...

Once I can find the cord for my camera, I'll upload some shots. I've been trying to get someone to build me a batch. The Gaffer is supposed to be a dream, but $5/lb is a little much until I start selling some of this stuff. I figure I could fire up a 20lb electric and make my own for less. Ah well, ...

Gabbert g-12 casting in progress

The spelling is going to be bad, and this is partial info, and I do have to go back to the basement and charge the pots. first: 1400 is not enough for "swift" casting. I slept with it at 1400, and it DID empty the pot, but not with speed. 1600 is too much for a 18in mold. 50/50 1550 is rea...

do you do any reinforcing, inside the plaster? Not the chicken wire on the outside, something on the inside? I've just started to do that with my pipes.

Structure is a wonderful thing. Speaking as a landlord who just got back from court.... If I was in the no $ category: Be the landlord and rent space to others. You can be as liberal, or harsh as your conscience will allow, but if someone doesn't pay you can evict them. Also , unless you get seperat...

Not sure because I still don't have a price list. I Dropped in, "Hi I want some glass" It could be gb12. But the amazing thing to me, was the texture. I could reach into the barrrel of cullet and not get bit. I still reach bare handed into the barrel. You hear about Soft glass, but this IS...

I'm still learning it, but here goes. It's got a nice finish, no noticable de-vit, even without kiln crashing. You could cast it around 14 if you're patient, 15 is fine. I've been working on flower pots and larger scale (15-40lbs). More pot holes, slow charge of pots, plan on all day. If you are nea...

I'm with Bert, even if you go down to fiber paper. I've seen some castings, made into a rebar cage lined with frax. The more detail you want, the more risk of undercuts etc.

I'm using a 4" pancake fan (+-$30 Grainger) runs 105cfm, out of a similar plywood window. Works OK, but I do burn some wax at times. I will be upgrading both the hood and the fan shortly.

OK 1 report, one new hint the copper clamp is working well. This is a clamp used to clamp a ground wire in your breaker box, then screw it tight. hint 1: Depending on the scale of the glass on the coil, I just tried a torch. USE A FACE SHIELD, and torch 1 edge of the glob. It should crack, and maybe...
