Re: Brown spots
If you've ever fired Bullseye 0116 on that shelf you might want to check put the information on the Bullseye web site. They write: "During processes that require greater heatwork, such as pattern or flow bar techniques, Turquoise Blue Opalescent has the potential to deposit trace amounts of cop...

Re: Silver foil & leaf
I will say that while the tarnish burned off the silver foil, it did crack/split. The effect looks rather like Bob Leatherbarrow's crackle surfaces. It's not unattractive but it's not what I was hoping for in this case. My firing schedule was 300 dph to 1225 with a 30 min hold, 500 dph to 1490 for 1...

Re: Silver foil & leaf
I finally got around to firing the tarnished silver foil. I put it on BE soft black, sprinkled a light layer of crystal clear powder across the whole surface and capped it with BE streaky clear/white. All the tarnish seems to have burned off.

Re: Silver foil & leaf
Jim,
I'm familiar with Tarnex and I know it works well on many silver items, but silver foil is just too fragile to handle in this way. Although it's called foil, it's nowhere near as sturdy as something like aluminium foil.

Re: Silver foil & leaf
Thanks Brad. I was hoping to have the silver stay its original colour. I guess I'll just have to run some tests with small pieces.

Re: Silver foil & leaf
Buttercup,
Thanks for this information. Although silver foil is slightly thicker than silver leaf, it's still only microns thick and I don't think it would survive being handled this way.

Silver foil & leaf
I would like to do a project with either silver foil or leaf. I have a sheet of each but I've had them for a long time and when I opened the packages I found the silver had tarnished. Can I fire this under a cap of BE mostly-clear streaky and expect the tarnish to burn off? Would it help to lay down...

Re: cutaway of a pot melt
Jim,
I just came across your request for a photo of a cutaway of a pot melt. This is not a pot melt, it's the end of a murrine pot from a vitrigraph kiln but it's the same principle.

Post by Dick » Fri Dec 07, 2018 2:58 pm Also, hxtal has a possiblity of failing when it is that old. Loctite hysol 30cl is a good two part crystal clear adhesive Dick, I Googled this Loctite and it says it's "clear, colourless to slightly yellowish" and it's fast setting - neither of whic...

Re: colourless glue
Thanks Tom and Don for these recommendations. I'll look into both of them. One of my requirements is that the glue be fairly viscous because the pieces I'm attaching to each other are curved and a runny glue would... run! While waiting to find a glue, I mixed up a batch of 4 - 5 year old HXTAL. The ...

colourless glue
Can anyone recommend a permanent, colourless glue for glass to glass bonding? I'd rather use a single part, UV sensitive glue than a 2 part, need-to-be-mixed adhesive.

Re: Pinholes after sandblasting
Most likely, the pinholes are left behind from small air bubbles. I'm not aware of any easy way to prevent or repair, it's the nature of the beast. Even Klaus Moje's pieces, which sell for thousands of dollars, have these small pinholes. Well it doesn't solve the problem but it certainly makes me f...

Pinholes after sandblasting
I've been finding some small pinholes on the surface of some plates I'm making after I sandblast them. These holes are not there after fusing and before sandblasting. I'm only sandblasting at about 40 PSI. Is there any way of avoiding or repairing these holes? I really don't want to have to fill the...

Re: 1/16" Fiber Paper
Jennifer, how did the 1.5 mil Morgan Thermal Ceramics paper perform for you? Would you recommend it? Is it smooth like Spectrum's Papyros or is it "fuzzy" like the thicker stuff? I have their 3 mil product but haven't tried to peel it apart to get a thinner piece. Thanks, Jen Jen, It does...

I took some pictures but my camera is not working well so I don't know how "diagnostic" they'll be. Photos DSCN0496 and DSCN 0502 show the bright white elements in contrast to the creamy ones. These were fired using schedule #2 then again using schedule #3. Photo DSCN0500 was fired with sc...

French Vanilla Woes
I’m trying to make some items with Bullseye’s French Vanilla (0137). I made a plate, composed entirely of Fr. Vanilla, with a single 3 mm layer base and smaller decorative pieces of Fr. Vanilla, placed about 1/8” apart, covering most of the surface, so that I essentially had a 6 mm thick piece. My g...

Re: Cutting Vermuculite Board
Thanks Brad and Marty,
I'll try to cut it with a hand jig saw. I'm a bit apprehensive about cutting a smooth circle (I don't want the glass disc fused inside it to have 'wobbly' edges) but I'll do a test piece first. Should I use a hardener on it once I've cut it?
