Joan, I composed a long reply, trying to help you understand the process instead of just supplying a different firing recipe than Skutt's. Unfortunately, when I went to post I got an "Invalid_Session" message and all was lost. I would send you a private post, but a private post to Christin...

Well, Christine, I tried to send you a private message, but got an "Invalid_Session" message instead. Curses. Depending upon the timing of your trip, there are two glass shows that you could see. The KiMo Theater Gallery (downtown, Central at 5th) is up through 6/25. It is limited to wall-...

Re: Remove imperfections on fused piece

Have fired a tray and it has several spots resembling water spots or devit. Can these be sanded and then refired? Or polished out? Thx, Jack I have not had enough occasions to be sure that this works every time, but have had refiring with Super Spray overglaze remove the white outline of water spot...

Without seeing your pieces, my guess is that it is kiln wash stuck to the bottom of the glass, the chewing-gum-on-the-shoe of kiln work. Possible removal methods: Long soak and vigorous scrubbing. Soak in vinegar and scrub. Soak in household lime removers and scrub (which have been reported to chang...

Excellent suggestions from both Jo and Ron, but also avoid having a two layer part of the piece above the air holes. The concern is that the double weight would cause that part of the piece to hit the mold earlier than it would otherwise. If you cannot do that, try a two layer base with the design a...

The frit will not burn off, so you will not lose it. However, you may have a different concern. If I'm understanding correctly, you have one layer of thin rolled. Not sure what thickness of glass you used for the second layer pieces. If also thin rolled, you have a thickness of 1/8" before the ...

I do not use float, but would not go from 750 to 1500 as fast as possible with 1/2" fiber blanket shielding part of the bottom glass. Jerry

Congratulations on trying. In case you don't know, silver will stain glass that is in direct contact with it. You may be seeing some of that effect even through the kiln wash. Of course, the good news is that brass is cheaper. When I do multiple layer, much larger opening drops my rule of thumb is a...

Re: It matters.

The American marketplace is driven by supply/demand and by perceived value. That's what advertising is all about, convincing the buyer that a poduct is better and thus worth more than another. There are thousands of products that are sold everyday for idiotic prices. Lots of them are of extremely p...

Thermal Ceramics' "Kaowool" boards have continuous use ratings of: M board: 1800 S board: 1900 HS board: 2000 All three have a maximum temperature rating of 2300. Do not know whose board you have, but it is likely to be able to be used at 1700. Do not know what kiln wash will do at that te...

I use an Ohaus triple beam balance scale for mixing Hxtyl. It is not digital. It measures in grams.

The accuracy of the scale becomes important when you are:

1) Mixing small quantities

2) Correcting the first mix when you overshoot in adding the second part.
