Hi Ron, Tnx for the tip on the lights. That is quite an informative web page. To your question, Local halogens are great for the light they give off but I'm guessing not so nice for the heat they radiate. You'll like them on those cold Columbus winter days coming up but I'm guessing in July/August y...

Ditto on Marty's comment on lighting. I have lot's of 8' florescent tubes. They work but I hate the flicker and the noise is terrible. I don't know if it is possible but if there is a way to quiet these things down I'd like to know. Can't afford to replace them for the moment. I've tried replacing s...

The best bang for the buck is probably to use an Inland strip cutter. This device also can cut circles but it is a little difficult for that purpose as it does not affix itself to the glass. I use a custom built cutter which I purchased from Jeremy Lepisto, a glass artist in Portalnd. It works fine ...

Re: Setting up a warm glass studio.....

I am preparing a presentation on this topic and would appreciate input on a few questions..... What do you know now that you wish you had known when setting up your studio? Space, both the use and amount. Ditto to Brock's statement and to add a little more....you can never have too much studio spac...

Marty, I use the Fellisati WG20 grinder. I got it from Granite City Tools (http://www.granitecitytools.com) It has a water center feed and a variable speed. It uses 4" discs which can be found from a number of sources. If you get this model be sure and also order the rubber backer pad which is ...

Marty, I got my first gallery through a donation to a local charity. The director of that gallary just happened to be there and he felt my work was better than anything else there being displayed. That being said, my piece too went for less than wholesale and I tend to think that my experience was t...

Hmmm.....well I would swear that I was told at Jackie's class that it was a double kiln failure with a meltdown in both. I thought that was might strange at the time but anyway I blame it on a geriatric moment. I have that privlage. I've earned it. #-o

Hm, I miss read the beginning. I was thinking you got the blade when you bought it. A new blade should not shimmy. If it is, I would return it or again, you are not getting enough water on it. When I cut with my saw it wants a LOT of water, right on the blade. I've had shimmy's before but not bad an...

The blade has been toasted due to previous use with no water. Go to HIS Glassworks and get a Result blade. http://www.hisglassworks.com/pages/result.html 23-4712W 10 x .040 x .276 x 5/8 x 1/2 $98.00 The .040 is just a tad thicker and holds up better. Make sure you are getting sufficient water flow o...

Couple of things to consider or check just to be sure things work. 1) Controller output. MOST controllers for kilns use a 24vdc output which is used to either directly drive a relay coil for the main power to your elements or it drives a secondary relay which in turns drives the relay for your main ...

I'm finishing building my own kiln. I'll post some pictures when I'm done. It's a bell kiln with two bottoms which are on wheels. The hoist is tall enough that I can work under the bell if I wish without bending over. The interior dimensions are 52" x 52" x 17". I've got Joppa Glasswo...

Breaks can occur on the way up or the way down and are not restricted to annealing issues. Are the edges of the breaks sharp or smooth and rounded? If they are clean the break most likely occured on the way down. If they are smooth then the break probably happened on the way up. I agree with Marty's...

Jerry,

What Charlie has used is Colloidal Silica. You can purchase it in bulk from Western Industrial Ceramics if you are on the west coast area. If you are on the east coast or central US just check at an industrial ceramic or insulation supplier and they should have it.

Dear fellow artists. We cannot deny that we are artists. Nor should we be ashamed. If you want out, next time an admiring individual spends some of their hard earned money on one of your pieces that they will be proud to display or to use; tell them, that the work is thoughtless, doesn't mean a dam...
