Interesting thread. For myself, a little history. My mother (and father for that matter) are artists. My mother, professionally, my dad as an avocaton, so I come from a family of artists. When I made the venture from high tech to glass art I had some discussions with my mom to ask her about her art....

For me actually cutting on a cushon only helps when you are cuttng large sheets, especially BE glass where the surface is not flat. The carpeted surface helps to even it out so when you push you are not over stressing some areas and being too light on others. Actually in cutting smaller pieces I don...

MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. It typically comes in 4' x 8' sheets and 1/2" MDF is then 1/2" thick MDF. It is a type of engineered wood product that is different from partical board board in that the size of grain used to manufacture it is very small. If you look at partical bo...

I use all three, carpet and just a clean MDF top and the plastic mesh. Carpet has the advantage for running scores on large cuts such as circles in that it has some give and lets you press to run the score. It has the disadvantage in that it is a pain to keep clean. Little glass shards can hide in t...

Not knowing your equipment it is a little difficult to guide but I'm currently setting up my studio and here are a few things I've done plus pointers I've gotten from others. 1) Separate your work areas if possible. Ideally you would want separate areas for the following: a) Cutting/design/prep b) C...

Interesting discussion. I'm just finishing builiding my studio so the following discussion pertains to AZ code but I suspect where you live it is not much different. On fire code, I do not need any ventilation or sprinkler system as there is no open flame. Our kilns are not much different than a lar...

Lauren, Good input. I'll have to check it out. That link you posted is dead but here is a link to their products: http://www.myob.com/us/products/ I see that they run on Mac's. I'm currently using my last PC. I've had it with Window$, Micro$oft and Billy boy. I'm switching to Linux full time. I'll h...

QB does track inventory but only in the sense that it expects you to buy an item or have and item at wholesale and then you sell it at retail. QB has no idea how to handle what we do as fusers and that is you buy raw material (ie sheet glass, frit, rods, etc.) and then you construct something from t...

I digress OT but....what the heck, I miss the musing of the old format so here goes.........I really wonder sometime's just where we as a society are going with technology. I like the benefits, like this board, but I wonder really is the price really worth it. I've ranted before about such things as...

Barbara, In the past I've never run a card this close to the top before. On my personal credit cards I always had a pretty good cushion on the remaining credit available (and I ALWAYS paid them in full every month). I just got a credit card for my studio/business and was wanting to only make these p...

Claudia,

Yes, I'm sorry I did flip NP to SP. I'm more than a bit dyslexic and tend to do things like that. Sorry for the confusion.

I don't know what was posted before but this is a simple calculation. Given the following variable assignments: GP = Gross Sales Price (This is the amount your customer pays) NP = Net Sales Price (This is the net amount of proceeds you will receive for your goods. TR = Tax Rate (This is the sales ta...

I've been using credit cards for oh, 32 years now since I was 18 (ok...do the math) and this is the first time something like this has happened to me. I agree that there is something a little shady on the legality side of this. If a company takes a reserve as an account's payable and then takes the ...

Interesting info wrt Credit Cards....at least new to me

Just got a call from one of the vendors I was purchasing elements for the kiln I'm building. Seems the CC number I gave them was bouncing. Being the anal person I am, I had no idea how this could happen as I track everything to the penny so I called my CC company to see what was going on. Turns out ...

Stainless does not flake. If you are getting or you have seen flaking the steel you are working with is not stainless.
