Re: Buying Taurus 3 - which extra blades should I get?
a 50/50 chance that mine will work and not give me too much trouble. Thank goodness you are not looking at the Apollo saw from them - overpriced and oversold - totally incapable of performance claimed and the polishing cartridge is a total joke and requires a change of the drive belt not just the c...

Re: splash guards/surround
Any ideas re. splash shields for tile saw & flat grinders??? Ideas????? Doesn't look great, but I use cardboard boxes; sometimes I set the box on edge and put the equipment into the box or I may flatten the box and set the cardboard behind the equipment like a room screen which doesn't interfer...

Re: Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks are common in float glass that has not been for lack of a better term, cooked long enough in the manufacturing process as that costs money. You can't tell by looking at it prior to firing it. As you've found, fusing it will result in good results but forming causes the issue. The only...

Re: Line shows on opal borders
Can you see the lines because the piece has thinned out at the joint? This can happen with two layers if the glass is on the thin side. Another possibility is that the glass is moving slightly during heat up. Damming the piece would prevent the glass from moving. Adding a third layer, or using a 6m...

Re: steel rod
I think your best bet is hollow tubing. Keep in mind, sometimes when you drape the glass over metal, the glass will close around the rod - making removal difficult, and then putting it on the chair much more problematic. I kiln wash my tubing and I put a heavy fiber paper over the rod. That said, e...

Re: How to dry frit
Hello all. I've crushed some frit. The average is the size of rice grains. Then ran a magnet through it. Then I washed it in a weak soap and water solution then rinsed in water. The frit holds a lot of water! Waiting for the water to evaporate takes forever. How do I dry the frit? Peter I put my 'r...

Re: cold working by hand
Searching the archives without success for a thread where coldworking with wet/dry sandpaper was discussed that seems appropriate for this discussion; there was a mention of an oil used to prolong the life of the sandpaper. Thought I had a 'favorite' for the topic, but can't find it and it is drivin...

Re: Seriously worth reading... Bullseye
Maybe even read a few times all the pages in Stone's Firing schedules for glass for even more understanding. Stone's Firing Schedules is available from Warmglass.com http://www.warmglass.org/servlet/the-1553/Firing-Schedules-for-Glass/Detail and well worth twice the price (glad I bought mine before...

The Slumpy's pendant fixtures are good quality (I bought one), easily adjustable and the lowest price I've seen.mwalker2992 wrote:Slumpy's has a large selection.

ss Foil at process temperatures?
I wonder if you could try placing a layer of stainless steel foil against the metal wall and reinstall the blanket over that. The ss foil is available through metal casting suppliers I believe. It might not stop the rust but it should at least contain it and keep it from falling on your work. Stain...

Re: Anyone every use Fusion Shield successfully?
The Fusion Shield material, whatever its make-up, does not stick to glass after cooling, and does result in a very smooth finished surface, without the need for a release. I'd like to hear from anyone who tried to solve the out-gassing problem, and what their experience was. Thanks! Hi, Mark: I'm n...

Re: lettering fused into or onto glass
@Chaim, I don't think that technique would work for this particular need, but I had forgot about that possibility--and the thought of trying out a vinyl plotter, or even a cricut to cut some flexi-glass is intriguing. The class I took for flexi-glass from a nationally-recognized instructor convince...

Oh yeah, my handwriting is abhorrent... truly. I took a calligraphy class once. The teacher recommended I become a doctor, and she gave up on my penmanship ever being a 'work of art'. :) Eric: Your calligraphy 'teacher' was either uninformed or lazy; calligraphy doesn't relate to penmanship at all,...

Thanks, Barry!Barry Kaiser wrote:Jerry,
As a sub for the Flexiglass, try any polyvinyl acetate or Poly-ox based glue such as Elmers, Alenes or Bordens. Mix with a little water to thin some. Use good quality wax paper or treated (for release) aluminum foil. Works quite well.

Re: irregular edges
First, when the piece is removed from the kiln, there is often a notch between two pieces where they meet along the edge of the piece. This is more pronounced on the edges where only two pieces meet. Secondly, sometimes there will be a thin light colored line between two pieces along their common e...
