It's my personal belief that any cold working equipment is messy and loud. Idealy you would have a separate room, away from the kilns, to cold work in.

You have all started me thinking my next purchase should be a wet belt sander. Pardon my ignorance, but how noisy and how messy are these to run? Thinking about the Model 460 horizontal and I live in an apartment now. Susan I wear ear plugs when I am using mine, but I use it all the time so I'm pre...

It really depends on what you are trying to achieve.

Personally, since I work with thick slabs, I need to have a wet belt sander and an angle grinder.

To be able to help you we need to know what you want to do.

I'm not sure that "more viscous" matters.

I use BE and I've never had the colors "bleed"

Hi Jim, I have one too. I found that I was going through my silicon carbide belts like warm butter, so then I bought some diamond belts from Abrasive Technology. It's great now. I have a 70 and a 220 belt that are plate bonded. They cost me $100 and $150. I've had the 70 for over a year and it isn't...

I don't live in CA, but you most likely will have to get commercial business insureance and then pay renter's insurance for your personal belongings.

I'm with Brock on this one. I do a lot of high fire. I use BE glass and BE kiln wash on fiber and mulite shelves. I mix my kiln wash to the consistancy of heavy cream and put 4 or 5 coats on. I only use it once before I recoat. It is going to stick to the glass so you will either have to sandblast i...

You can just sandblast off the top layer. The lead in the Spray A reacts with the Sulfur in the FV.

That's really too bad. Since I don't have a similar organization here to belong to the BCGAA filled a void. It will be missed.

I also want to make it clear that this is what works for me. Once I figured out what would work, I stopped looking. It is entirely possible that other people with more experience than I fire red and yellow Paradise Paints in a totally different way than I do.

All the way through process temp. Which for me and my kilns is somewhere b/w 1250 and 1300F I'd have to go back and look at my notes to find the exact temp that works for me, but it wouldn't work for you anyway. So, there is a target range for you to start in. This is the kind of thing that requires...

It's absolutely in the chemistry. It's the same thing as firing ceramic glazes, they are different colors if fired in a reduction environment opposed to one that is oxygen rich. I only really have a working knoledge of Paradise paints, being that I know what I have to do to get them to turn out the ...

I have never used the paints you have used, I use Paradise Paints, but it sounds like you burned the red and yellow out. I would try firing to a lower temp. and venting the kiln. I have found that, especially, when using red that I have to have an oxygen rich environment.

Galleries in Auckland

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine is going to Auckland, NZ in December and was asking me if I knew of any galleries that she could visit. She is a printmaker so that is her main interest but she is also interested in other mediums as well. If you have any suggestions that would be great.

Thanks,
Amy

I agree with Geri and Kitty, but wanted to add one thing. I have my studio in my house, this is a real problem for the insurance people, atleast my old carrier anyway. When I went to them for business insurance, because I wanted the liability coverage, I only told them about the kilns. They dropped ...

Good point Lionel.

In this case I would absolutely agree. You might want to invest in a bigger saw too, one that is more robust and built for heavy use.
