Pilchuck randomness
It's not unreasonable that classes like Klaus' aren't filled solely by lottery. If a prospective student is awarded a juried scholarship (and signed up for Klaus' class), then it seems unlikely that s/he would be expected to wait for a lottery slot as well. Also, there are institutions that are part...

I also called, same problem with new fees. You can also be listed as a "seasonal merchant". If you only do a few shows each year, and you know what months they occur in, you can request to be activated for those months only. You will only be billed the monthly minimum when your service is ...

a donation of value
For local organizations I support, where the donation doesn't have to be artwork, I have donated a "private class taught in my studio". Usually this brings full auction price, and provides me with an alternative when I feel that the glass work won't bring full price. (because of audience, ...

flashy pink ribbon
if you're planning to make multiples for fundraising, may I suggest a pink Pearl-ex shape stenciled on thin black (a pin that's too heavy is very undesirable). Perhaps save the dichro pins for the key note speakers.

like the look but not the problems
C- If you find metal objects with texture you like, you can replicate them using a plaster silica mold, particularly if there are not too many undercuts. There are also moldable fiber products you can use, if the pattern is not too detailed. Have a concept, research a couple mold processes, and have...

reflecting on art
Cynthia brings up a lively subject ! Pricing should be set by what the artist thinks s/he needs to make, and the "market" will handle the details. Does someone else's work reflect badly on our own ? It seems that if one's work is good, then it should stand alone. In assessing what is "...

rigidize or not
I recently posted regarding repairing a rigidized 110J mold that cracked, and there were no replies. Considering this, I would fire unrigidized as long as possible (can be many firings, with care), then rigidize when it gets too floppy. The rigidized mold is stiffer but substantially more brittle......

quick repair to small crack in rigidized 110J ?
I have a rigidized 110J mold, and a horizontal flat part of that mold is developing a crack. My inclination is to patch the underside with some thinner fiber and more rigidizer, perhaps the alumina rigidizer instead of the silica one. Any tricks others have tried ?

Palo Alto galleries
For a start, there is Stanford University Art Gallery in Palo Alto, as well as some incredible outdoor sculpture and architecture. There is the Triton Museum in Santa Clara [currently hosting a show by the Bay Area Glass Institute]. The Triton also had a publication near the information desk that li...

know thy students ?
What makes a good student ? There is as much variation in pupil ability as there is in instructors. I teach beginners & intermediates and find a very wide range of student desires. If they own a kiln (or plan to purchase), then they want technical info. otherwise many are not interested in the &...

I finally came to the same conclusion...MS Word mail merge, though it took me several attempts to figure out how to get mail merge loaded on to the pull down menu. [which is where I was stuck before...thinking that I didn't even have that option on my software version]. Bought some Avery labels toda...

easy mailing labels ?
My mailing list is not large enough to make it worthwhile to use a mail house, so I'm still sending from home. However, the mailing list is large enough that I don't want to handwrite all the addresses. SO...What is an easy way to use an excel spreadsheet (or similar) to print labels and what label ...

credit card conundrum
Hi Claudia - Timely post for me. This problem has bothered me for about two years...only having 2-3 small shows each year, I didn't want to pay minimums and statement fees. I tried my local banks, without luck. An artist friend recommended Discover business (you can accept visa and MC , too). No fee...

teaching
Speaking as both a teacher and a student, I agree with much of what has been said. I would like to add that teaching a class that is focused on technique or skills (which I admit is a portion of my own methodology) is a wee bit like the proverb about "giving a person a fish" versus "t...

kiln sponsors - demand for affordable overtemp controller ?
Fearing the worst - thermocouple failure during heat up of my kiln - I installed a home built overtemp controller that will shut my kiln off if it overfires. I did this as a retrofit to my exisiting controller, and think there is a market for an inexpensive, after market, overtemp controller. There ...
