Kiln Question
I am finally getting back to fusing after a long break.
Is there anything I need to check before I test my kiln ( Glass Glow) after not using it for 10 years? It's got a nice Paragon controller that I don't want to mess up!

Re: Anneling kiln for fusing?
It should as long as it will fire to the processing temps you need for your work. The Skutt ones I looked at had a top temp of 1700*, which is higher than you need for Bullseye glass.

Havi, have you tried turning it off & unplugging it for an hour and then replug it in & setting the new program? If this doesn't work check circuit breaker or fuses.

Re: Drill bit attachment
I use a cordless Dremel with a diamond bit from Harbor Freight, in a shallow pan of water. Cordless will keep her from getting shocked - water on bit and glass will keep it from heat shock.

Re: Incompatible color?
No it's not that unusual when using glass from different manufacturers, even though they are supposed to be the same COE. There are other factors that determine compatibility, that could be explained better by others. Even some glass made by the same company with the same COE can show incompatibilit...

Re: Wave Mold Slump Breakage
What is the thickness of each layer you are fusing? They look like single layers so maybe your annealing segment is too long. I don't think you need to add the thickness of your fiber paper, just the glass.
The cracks look unhealed, if this is correct then it cracked on the cooling segment.

Re: Cleaning Glass after Grinding Edges
You might want to check BE reactions, straight advice I got years ago from BE Reactive Potential of Bullseye Glass (charts) When certain Bullseye glasses are combined in the kiln, their chemistries may react with each other to produce special effects. The reactions will take place at the interface (...

Re: fused glass and stone.
I would think you would need stone with the same or very near the same COE as the glass to keep from fracturing.

If you need a larger hole you could use "refractory fiber rope" that has been soaked with kiln wash & completely dried to facilitate removal.

I use Spraylat, it is great for touching up etchings (remasking areas where the origional mask didn't hold and for texturing) and masking 3D and uneven or bumpy surfaces. Because you paint it on it works great with stencils and for different effects. A little bit goes a long way. I got 2 quarts 15 y...

While you are looking you should look at the Glass Glow kilns, very proudly made by Phil Teefy. These kilns are specifically made for glass fusers with care to design out the problems some kilns have. For instance there is braided refractory rope around the lid (to stop heat loss due to lid warpage)...
