I'm probably showing my ignorance ... I was taught that kiln wash is only effective at full fusing temperature once. So if you prefire at 1500, haven't you already used it? Alecia That is what I learned from the books I taught myself with as well--however I find that I can fire a couple of times--s...

I pre-fire to 1450, every shelf, every time, except when making small objects that couldn't possibly trap air/steam/water. Going that high in a pre-fire supposedly also eliminated chemical steam from quartz inversion, a subject about which I know nothing. I do know I never get bubbles. Brock That's...

As for a 24 hour turn-around Brock mentioned. I assume this is for glass kilns only? maybe bell kilns?. My ceramic kiln retains heat very well. If I were to let my kiln cool naturally after a 1450 fire. the kiln would take 2.5 days to reach room temp. So on my last three fires, I have cracked the l...

I've had trouble with Egyptian Blue--sometimes it has that metallic sheen on it and sometimes it doesn't, no predicting why. It only happens (when it does happen) with more than one full temp. firing, never on a first firing or at least not for me. I never use overglaze though so I can't help you wi...

You are too funny. I say that a lot to you, don't I? Your boxes are very thought provoking. I'd love to see one in person. Amy Well that's just because I am so incredibly humorous! So why not just drive over here and take a look? Its only about 2,150 miles plus a ferry ride. We are going to be home...

Hey Amy since I made you think about a new idea does that mean you will give me a hint or two about your high fire tricks? Oh who am I kidding I could never do it as well as you do and I would probably end up catching myself on fire somehow. Thanks everyone...I especially like "fantabulo...

Thank you to the three of you and to those of you sending nice emails as well--I very much appreciate the support and compliments. Susan--Its funny that you mentioned that about running your hands over "Shattered" because while I was working on it and had a bar or two of it out on my layou...

Lyn I would seriously consider saving up for a more powerful torch. I have a Nortel Mid-Range which is what I started with. I'm so glad I did because I ended up doing much more than just the little things I thought I was going to do with it. Seems like a lot of people who start small in glass end up...

Sean I know we were supposed to be looking at the fused piece but your "Subtle Bottles" caught me before I got there--they are awesome! I love the blue and the green especially. In fact the color palette you work with (at least as its represented at Vetri) is wonderful--my favorite colors!...

I like the spa idea--I've already mentioned it to my husband. As far as the picture is concerned--how I look when drilling is far too embarrassing to post! Carol's description fits pretty well. I have a very similar setup except that my water feed is a bottle that must be refilled but I just fill lots of lots of containers with water and have them handy so I hardly ever have to stop and fetch more--it would be nice though if I could have a warm water feed as you must have. My husband built...

Don't think I could farm this job out--too small and precise, I'd rather do it myself. Its not really too horrible--once you get into a rhythm you can get a lot done in a short time. I did almost 300 holes in several hours last week (thank heavens for the drill press) and as long as I space it out b...
