Finish
Well actually as I said about the finish...I used a small cleanup brush (i don't know what else to call it) that is brass. I just continued brushing the surface with the brass bristles and it started applying to the "raised" areas of the surface. Slight problem which I'm working on...this ...

Piece
Yes, it was an attempt to give a modern look to an old idea...the lines help the piece succeed in that respect. 'Industrial' is what I was after. It was not intended to be a realistic eye...enough artists have succeeded there in many different mediums.

Piece.
Barbara, thanks for the comments :) I like the lines too :) ----- John, To start answering your questions about the piece: I have to be honest in saying that this piece is no more than simply a ‘thing in and of itself’. No more, no less was the design intent of the piece other than to be shaped like...

John.... Thanks for taking the time to think about the piece. I appreciate the insightfulness :) Yes, those dog gone 'stylistic' lines. For some reason they really appeal to me. The 'napkin' sketch I did of the piece included those and as I thought about it as I was sculpting...I did debate adding o...

The piece is about 10" long X 6" tall and about 1.5" deep. I've not made a 'stand' for it yet, but it's sleeping on its back in the pic. Yes, it is cast glass with a brushed brass brush finish. ----- Grooves on the sides and around the eye...when I was designing it, I wanted it to hav...

Ok, here is a new piece I took out of the oven this afternoon. That isn't an iridized gold finish...but rather applied with a brass brush by rubbing. The coating comes off when washed with a damp cloth. A surface which looks nice...any ideas on perhaps a more stable coating ? Also any comments, crit...

Brock...are you saying the pigments are added before casting or after the cast is completed ? Sorta like a patina ? Not famaliar with oxides and pigmentation.
Thanks

Artist...and the work.
The particular piece I was curious about it at this web address.... http://www.glassartcanada.ca/irenefrolic/hidemyself.html The artist is Irene Frolic. I'm wondering how she was able to achieve the colors and texture of the piece ? Still I guess my question holds...about surface textures and "...

I've seen some kiln cast glass with what appears to be quite detailed, gradated colors... My question is are these unique and "sensitive" areas... A. Painted B. Patinaed C. Actual colored glass melted in the cast D. none of the above E. all of the above I know it's hard to choose without s...

Thanks for all replying
Thanks for all that replied to my wax issue and bubbles. Gained a lot of insight. I took several suggestions and combined them...I just poured a wax cast last night and let cool. Very few bubbles ! This is what I did... 1. I used striclty microcrystalline wax (although not virgin, recycled)...I did ...

Okay...interesting bubble info...
Krishnan,
I had done that before...the last item you pointed out...mixing beeswax and microcrystalline. I will do as suggested, throw out the old and try virgin microcrystalline.
Is there any other wax you can suggest using ? I know there are a ton of varities out there.
Thanks a ton,
Russ

Wax copies....itty bitty (small and numerous) air bubbles.
I have a silicone mold I'm using to make wax copies for use in the lost wax process. When I pour wax into the silicone mold, I end up (sometimes more, sometimes less) with lots of very small air bubbles that cling to the surface of the silicone mold...and in tight areas will even create a 'void'. Do...

Drying...the ticket !
Ok, for those interested and having similar issues .... I more thoroughly read the instructions from the R&R910 webpage for using their investment. It instructs a couple differnet temps to heat at (if I recall correctly), but I decided to go ahead and heat at 400 degrees F and hold for 2 hours. ...

Kiln Cast Crystal...same as regular Bullseye type glass ?
I've heard the term "kiln cast crystal". Is this the same type of glass that I buy from Bullseye ? Or is it another type of glass or crystal ?
If it is differnet are there any good resources available to purchase some ? Manufacturers ?
Thanks a ton,
Russ

More Info
A little more info...its a small open face mold...the piece measure about 3 x 2 x .5 inches. With about 1.5 inches of mold thickness all around, top and bottom.
Hope that helps a little more.
Thanks again,
Russ

R&R 910 Open Face Cast - Mold Cracking
OK, I've tried removing all water and chemically adhered water from my molds that are made from the R&R 910 material. Has anyone had any problem with mold cracking ? These are minor and could be considered an 'embellishment'.....but I don't like 'em if I can get rid of them. I noticed a cracked ...

Gas is the way to go ?
From the element issue...burning out...needing replacement...sounds like the preferred option by most that do crucible work is to have a gas cruicible kiln ?
