I have stacked shelves in my Skutt coffin. You do have uneven heating occurring since most of the elements are in the lid. When I stack I use two shelves. The glass on the top shelf will full fuse while the glass on the second shelf will tack fuse. So I arrange my projects accordingly. How consistan...

Carol, How deep is your kiln? I have a tall ceramic kiln, and I slump 4 shelves at a time in it with very good results. That really saves on the electric bill. My tall kiln only has side elements. In my large coffin kiln, which has side and top element I often use 2 layers of shelves. The top layer ...

Hi Dick, Let me know if you have rust problems when you slump the sandblasted piece in the wok. I carved the bottom of a piece and slumped it in a wok. Rust stuck to the sand blasted area only. I am going to try a couple of chemicals before I blast the areas because I am not sure that sandblasting a...

Great link Ron. Alpha particles can't travel far because of their low energy, but if inhaled or ingested they can do a lot of damage to cells. Read the MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet) for all of the chemicals you use (The manufacturer has to provide them to you) and they will tell you what the haza...

I have actually heard a new ager friend say that she didn't want to wear a battery powered watch because of the effects of the electric radiation. Bert When the first glow in the dark watches came out they did end up effecting people's health because of radiation. Not the people wearing the watches...

True. Low energy Alpha particles don't have enough energy to do much damage. Beta radiation can cause a great deal of damage because there is enough energy to enter the cellular walls and then the impart all of their damaging energy to the cell (That is why they are used in cancer treatment) but the...

this isn't correct, and may be coming across as wrong due to language differences. there is no such thing as artificial radioactivity. it is all natural. radioactivity comes from 3 types of particles: alpha, beta, and gamma. these particles are produced by the breakdown of various radionucleotides,...

Good point. However, I can tell you that for most people the exposure they receive from naturally occurring radiation can be much higher than they will ever receive from artificial radiation sources. I often would have patients that had exposure concerns from Nuclear Medicine tests or x-ray procedur...

Martha, I am sure the archives have a lot of discussion on this. You can use a kiln designed specifically for glass or use a ceramic kiln, which can go to much higher temperatures. As far as manufactures, it depends on who you talk to. I have heard Paragon has good kilns, but some people don't like ...
