i dont know why they put that coloring in there.
So that you know that the shelf has been fired and is ready to use. Brock
So, I can't use it until it has been prefired and loses the pink?

BE pink kilnwash

I have actually gotten myself a real kiln shelf to try (I hvae only used fiber board til now). Anyway, I kilnwashed it and it is a lovely peptobismal pink. My question is when it is completely dry is it still pink or do I need to wait longer til it turns someother color? It feels dry, been sitting o...

strange cracks.......help

I just pulled this piece out of the kiln last night and was getting it ready to clean it up and noticed some small internal fissure looking things. The pics are blurry but I think that the fissures will be visible. They are not able to be felt as a crack from either side of the piece. There are abou...

Tony S- I guess I wasn't very clear.......I am not so worried about the shelf incurring damage as I am the glass being exposed to cool air if I vent it, since the shelf is basically level with the opening when I lift the lid. I think I am going to try to solve this dilemma by baffling around the she...

Venting

I have a fiber clamshell kiln that I am finding holds heat like it is hermetically sealed, but I am afraid to vent it because the shelf would be exposed to the outside air. Is there any way to safely vent this thing so my firings don't last an eon? Could I drill a hole in each side?

Thanks, Lisa

So upping the temp will work.......thanks. Now, I used thinfire under the slices and I would like to just refire as is, leaving the dams, the paper and the 1/8" paper dam liners. Any problems with that? Do I need to pull it out and put new thinfire?

thanks, Lisa

sinkhole question

i am firing half inch thick pattern bar strips butted together and I am getting some sinkholes in some places where the seams are, primarily in the transparent colored areas. I am thinking that I am not firing hot enough and if I increase the temp, the surface will level out. I only went to 1450 and...

Changing Controllers

For all of you electrically minded folks out there, how difficult would it be to replace an existing controller with a different one? I have a Denver clamshell that has a TSC Red Lion controller on it that is the most counter intuitive thing I have ever encountered. I love my Rampmaster II on my Eve...

Judd-

I know that there are some folks in Missouri and Alabama, but as far as being really close, I am probably it.

Fiber board works well ad cuts easily with an exacto. Check your yellow pages for a local refractory. The one here sells 1/2" board for $6 a sq foot.

Check your shelf with a straight edge and see if it is level. I don't think it is your schedule, I'm betting your shelf has some minor depressions that are trapping air in the larger pieces. The solutions are going back to using fiber paper or getting a new shelf. Also, you might try flipping the sh...

Nick-

Check out this link. It is for an MK-100 which is a 10" saw as well, but it is considerably less expensive than the 101. It also comes with the stand and the shipping is free. Really great deal, got one for myself.

I have actually gotten rid of small bubbles that way. The top of the piece had a rashy look to it, so I flipped it over and drilled into each of about 10 bubbles. This piece had a clear base and an opal top, so it was easy to locate the bubbles from underneath. I refired on thinfire so the air could...

I know that you think that the bubbles are not in between layers of glass, but it might be worth assuming that the space between the textured irid and the adventurine green is sealing off too fast at your current ramp rate of 250dph between 1100 and 1250 and trapping air that volcanos when it gets t...

Thanks for the responses. I am just looking for crisper edges on flat pieces and bowls before they are slumped. So, it sounds like the wbs is the way to go for me.

And, yes Patty, I will be sure to pull the hair back.......not looking for a scalping any time soon!
