It's the coating that prevent the glass from slumping smooth. I also experienced the same thing with iridized granite glass. If you want it smooth, you need to cover the dichroic or iridized glass with a sheet of clear, or if it's clear dichroic, face the coated side down. J.

anyone got a good tip for removing the labels in the first place? i've tried soaking, razor blades, chemicals, etc and nothing works well. what happens when you don't take it off? does it burn up completely without leaving traces? :?: What kind of chemicals are you using. I just use Goo Gone or Goo...

Thank you Charlie. Would ramping at 250/hr be slow enough :?: J.

De-stressing tempered glass.

We have recently acquired several pieces of 18" square 1/4" thick glass that was used for displays at an old gift shop. All this glass is tempered. I would like to take these pieces into the kiln to de-stress it so we can cut it and fuse with it and also to do some deep carvings. Would any...

The Spectrum Silvercoat is mirrored spectrum glass. If you heat it to fusing temps, the silver burns out leaving a putrid yellow silver stain on the glass... amazingly, some of the back coating remains. Tony Thanks for the input Tony. Have you tried it with clear glass on top? Or did you just put i...

Thanks Linda and Brock. I still want to see if I can fuse a clear piece of glass over it. I'm figuring that if the Dichroic coating looks pretty kewl with clear over it, maybe the silvercoat will be okay too. I feel like being a pioneer this weekend. Don't wish me good luck, cuz luck is not a factor...

Spectrum Silvercoats Fusing Experiment

I want to experiment with some Spectrum silvercoat and clear glass. Has anyone tried this before? Am I going to blow up my kiln trying? What's the worst case senario? Will the metalic surface react weird with the heat? I'm not a rocket scientist, but I really want to try this. If anyone has any reas...

Some very unique pieces you've got there, Dick. I enjoyed viewing your work. But then I'm a big fan of color. :) J.

Hmm, Caught me. I knew I couldn't fool you BC. Actually, when it landed on the ornament, I almost couldn't make it out because the red of his tail matched the fracture streamer red of the ornament perfectly. The instruction to my camera came in every single language except english. So I can't figure...

Thanks Lauren,
Very nice of you. I'm very proud of my son and the True Blues Piece too. Since I was the one who taught him stained glass and also gave birth to him, I guess I'll take some of the credit :P . J.

Thank you Glassman.
If you saw what the shop looks like today after preparing for a 2 day festival, you may think differently. My loving husband has made things very nice for us in the studio. It's my favorite place to be. :) J.

Thank you Susan,

It's a cabachon wrap. The idea is from "Innovative Adornment" by Jane Persico. Lots of great ideas in her book. J.

Wow Jack, that must have been a really big plotter. My husbands plotter cost less than $2000.00 and he got the whole kit and cabootle, with patterns and vinyl and videos etc. He makes all my stencils for my etched dichroic designs, and he uses it for stencils for his sandblasted glass art. The possi...

Red Dragonfly Close-up

I know that the picture is a bit fuzzy, but it was really the best thing caught on camera on the cold and rainy weekend at the Lowell, IN "Labor Day Fest" A beautiful Red Dragonfly landed on a fused ornament. I guess he just wanted to get out of the rain. I posted the picture in my Picture...

Thank you very much for all your input. I've never tried to fuse with Yough. I've only fused with float glass/murini slices- 104, Spectrum/Uroboros 96 and Bullseye/Uroboros 90. I was hoping that some Armstrong or Wissmach glass might be compatable with any of these. Oh Well, I guess I'll just have t...

COE for Most Armstrong and Youghiogeny Glass Question

Is there a list somewhere that shows what the C.O.E. for most of the Glass Mfgrs glass is, i.e. Armstrong, Youghiogeny, Wissmach, etc. I know most Bullseye and Uroboros is 90, and most Spectrum is 96. Just wondering if I could fuse some dichroic into glass by these other mfgrs without having the tri...

Robert, You're a big help. :D I appreciate the information. I was doing something similar, but going one number at a time, waiting about 15-20 minutes between, recording the temp, etc. I found a kitchen stop watch that has 3 different modes, so I can time 30, 60, and 90 minutes. I figure with my ten...

Testing my new Hot Box Kiln

Hi All, First time fuser here with a scary new machine. :? I've only used this kiln to make little glass globs, and to fire Silver Art Clay. I was very happy with my silver piece, but the ramp time recommended is only one hour, and the soak time 10 minute, and no annealing needed. I don't feel that ...
