Shorted winding should have blown that fuse. So there is probably an open winding. Try an Ohm Meter for diagonostics on the winding.

I would assume that if you did just one color they muddy situation would not occur. Since one of your colors is purple and becomes mixed with the other two some transparency would disappear. I would also suspect the degree of transparency would greater if there was a smaller quantity of the purple. ...

It is just a little better than etching cream, but for best results an air compressor is a big bonus. The can of propellent are handy but you can get better control with the compressor.

Be sure to use a partical mask when you use than.

Eventually you will probably want an upgrade.
