This is some of my new work. Pate de verre, System 96. I've been blowing glass for 18 years and got into kiln work in 2013. This board has been a great resource. Thanks everyone.

Perhaps you've lost an element or they are getting old, etc.

Cynthia, what do you use for a face material in that case?

Re: Smoke from refractory investment molds
I stopped using it. Stinks worse than the stuff I'm trying to burn out. You can make something pretty close with perlite, chopped fiberglass, and grog.

Re: Smoke from refractory investment molds
I had the same problem with the R&R 910. Might be they started putting polyester fibers in there or something.

Re: Mixing large amounts of dry plaster and silica
I premix in a Harbor Freight cement mixer I got on sale. I made the lid out of a piece of plexi glass with a floor mat glued to one side. A couple of wraps of duct tape around the side and it's sealed. You can use plywood or whatever, that's just what I had lying around. Fits a 50# bag of each perfe...

Re: Ball milling residue
The finest particulate is small enough to suspend in the water and won't settle out(at least not right away). Glass or alumina, that stuff can be weird.

You might try washing the frit. I grind for powder and sometimes I feel like there is something as too fine as well.

One thing they have going for them in Murano is the convection in their ovens. It's not something most people have in their electric kilns.

Re: Using spectrum cullet for pate de verre
I'll try to get a picture in the next few days. I initially welded a bucket holder right to the drum. The 5 gallon bucket fits right in the mouth. I did this for several reasons: Easy to change and keep colors separate. Easier to keep the dust contained. The mixing barrel is just too big. I eventual...

Re: board (?) jewelry casting molds
Hard ceramics are going to be really difficult to machine. Just about everything else is pretty nasty without excellent dust collection. You might have luck with this material http://www.glasscolor.com/products/defa ... 50&pID=145

Re: Watlow controller
You could use a 120v ez zone and skip the transformer. Also not all SCRs are phase angle fired. You generally need to specify when ordering. SSRs are good and cheap.

Re: Watlow controller
You could absolutely do the light switch with the Ez Zone limit in the controller. Just wire your light switch in series with the relay coil circuit. That's pretty good pricing too, what's your source? What would you need the power supply for? Are you using low voltage controls?

Re: Watlow controller
They are not stand alone products. You will need an interface. We have these in four large annealers each with one zone on each side plus an over-temp control and they work well. Certain colors are more chemically active than others.

Re: Using spectrum cullet for pate de verre
Forget about all that chemical stuff. Make yourself a ball mill. I welded up a frame that holds a 5 gallon bucket and then welded that to an old home depot cement mixer like this one: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Proforce-1-2-HP-Portable-Cement-Mixer-105890DPT/202081851?N=5yc1vZc7qb I found one for ch...
