Re: Setting up a warm glass studio.....

Any random thoughts or suggestions? thanks! judith Random thoughts? The drunk Irish guy, William Lloyd (?) who smashed the Portland Vase, arguably the greatest piece of glass art ever, only got fined 5 pounds and got a week or two in jail. I'm thinking as a result of this injustice, that he may hav...

Re: Differences between various Thompson's products as mediu

I should try that agar. It says its water-based and is a solution, so certainly it can be thinned with water. I've never sprayed mica either. But I have sprayed glass paint with Klyr Fire and Thompsons A13 acrylic. I've added Golden airbrush acrylic medium, for thinning acrylics, and have used a cou...

I'm not as confident as y'all. I see 75% of the North American middle-class trying to wind-down from the rat race over the next two decades, moving to the Sun Belt to stress-out the infrastructure and the environment. The demographics are scary, the competition from abroad will be brutal. The next g...

Re: air brush paint

Just got an airbrush...What kind of paint do I need for firing on glass plates and where do I buy it? do you want your plates to be food safe? do you want your plates to be dishwasher safe? do you mind if lead and cadmium float in clouds around your head while spraying? Are you familiar with paints...

Re: Beautiful work, Jim - thanks to both for your reply (mor

I'm a novice at this - but I haven't had any trouble with the Reusche paints once I figured out my own formula for ratio of paint / gum arabic / vinegar. I think that I'm going to experiment with some of the matte pieces by refiring after using the clear coat overglaze by Fuse Master. Maybe it will...

Re: What is a powder wafer?

Close - the leaf (like many powder wafers) was made in reverse -- design-side down against the shelf. So the details go on first, working towards the back ofthe leaf. - Paul Can someone explain the advantage found in doing this prefired wafer technique, rather than just sifting back layer to front ...

I've always taken it up to 1400 or higher, and I fire multiple times without problems. I don't know how glossy it will be at 1350, but you won't ruin the PP. It's so full of flux that it fires up nicely in my experience over and over again. If you spray the enamel-on, it takes a very heavy applicat...

Re: newcomer - question about glass painting

clip Any ideas or suggestions? I have the space to fire at least 6 plaques at a time - but don't want to end up with 2 glossy and 4 matte. I don't think the issue is any more complicated than what you suspect. Or that theres an easy resolution like flux overspray. I think you'll just have to increa...

Thanks for the nice comments. I'm particular about trees. I can do a better tree than that. I usually make a dozen or two of the suncatchers, by the end of each series, I've just about got the hang of it. - Its pumpkin carving time.

Christmas SUncatcher

Got a prototype made of this year's Christmas suncatcher. It needs somethings done better (tree sucks) but I like the idea. The more you fire Reusche bright white enamel, the grayer it gets. White goes-on last from now on. Have to put the glass paint away anyway and start on pumpkin carving. http://...

Don, nice design on the circle. They would make a spectacular transom. I have a question about that piece and this one. Do you test for tin side on your float to see which side to put the SS? I've heard non-tin side will take SS better. What's the buzzzzz? I don't know anything about how stain work...

In contrast to the pic posted earlier, Cliff Oester's Old Walpole stain on unblasted float kicks ass. Bug body gold color is silver stain:

silver stain on sandblasted surface

I made a suncatcher yesterday. Its float glass that I sandblasted with 80 grit SiC. I put stain on it , then some transparent enamel in a second firing. The stain was a weak brand; Reusche medium yellow. I sprayed it all over the piece, then removed it as much as possible except from the little push...
