Re: Buying a used belt sander

Won't work!!! Water is used, not oil. Water would spray everywhere an quickly ruin the woodworking tool mechanics as well as soak the user. "The right tool for the right job" is the best advice here. If your just doing edges than a bench model WBS is probably adequate.

Re: Chihuly App

Latest "Art Glass" magazine shows yet another glass maker blatently copying Chihuly. I think jealousy of Dale's work and accomplishments accounts for most of the negative comments!

You could bundle 10 0r 12 together ..hold with tape ..then saw the bundle at length marked along top piece (or use a stop).Bullseye used this method in one of their videos.

Re: GE Silicone II

I have used GE Silicone 2 on outdoor glass to glass and Glass to aluminum with no failures for years. I have 12 year old sculptures in gardens that reach 95F plus in summer sun and are now frozen under snow in sub Zero temps. Never had a joint let go. I always buy a fresh tube for new work.

Re: quality glass cutter

In the last 2 days I have cut over 400 strips 1/4" wide x 24" long with 100% straight accurate breaks.... Pistol grip, tap wheel, does the trick.. I think the tap wheel really helps.

Re: Cutting, devit spray, and other questions

The old original shelf paper ((15yrs ago) used to curl and shrink...but the more recent formula thinfire (last 10yrs or so) does not shrink or curl. I have a 50 yard roll plus a bunch of the 20" sheets that I've been using for years with excellent results, no curl, no shrinkage, no fog. Maybe y...

Re: Cutting, devit spray, and other questions

The pieces you show should be an easy cut with NO grinding required. Get some used window glass (free) and practice your scoring and breaking skills (over and over).. Just enough pressure to get a good one pass score will come easy with some time spent learning (that is assuming your cutter is not d...

Re: Waffers

If you have a small Hotbox or other jewellery type test kiln you can fire wafers in approx. 30 minutes. I use thinfire and set kiln on high...constant monitor when when kiln hits 12ooF...when you see wafer surface just start to appear wet (glaze) turn off kiln and vent.. Wafer will not have shrunk a...

Re: Vermiuculite board

I have been using the same 1" Vermiculite shelf now for 8 to 10 years. Initially I painted rigidizer on both sides. Then I remeber the first firing with empty kiln was somewhat smokey (be prepared to vent studio).. One important step is always provide plenty of support underneath. I space mine ...

Re: Large Kiln Shelves

Another alternative shelf material is Vermiculite. I bought 2 boards fifteen years ago and I'm still using the first one. A 1" well supported shelf will give you years of service. It was initially rigidized and I use shelf paper or dry powder as separator. Never been kilnwashed.

Re: Glass hanging methods

You don't mention the size (weight) of the piece... Small pendant size pieces will work with wire... but larger panel size work your asking for trouble at firing or later after installation. Drilling holes, then lining holes with a grommet, using cable or small chain, is a cleaner, more professional...

Re: Coe 96

Glass made for kilnwork with the "96" label is formulated to resist devit. from multiple firings as well as consistent COE96 to aid compatibility. Regular stock Spectrum may or may not be in the 96 range but WILL devit. when heated.
