If you do not have good air circulation around the glass, it will heat unevenly and you'll be more prone to breaks during the firing process. Perhaps the fiber construction allows this as they say, but I would be cautious if I had a lot invested into the piece.

Re: MR-97 mold release
Anything touching a mold, whether protected with BN, shelf paper or kiln wash, is going to have a different finish than the "air side".

Re: Hmmm ... can this technique be ported to glass?
I made a chocolate cake yesterday -- lovely recipe with buttermilk and strong coffee. I was going to put a simple icing on it. I was impatient trying to get it out of the darned bundt pan i'd used, and basically ripped the whole bottom off of it. After I stopped kicking myself (the cake was for a di...

Re: OMG: I've been given a bottle!
I don't typically do bottles, but was dumpster diving at the local glass recycle (OK, we were dropping things off and you can't help but look in and see what kind of cool glass there might be). I found a Sky vodka bottle -- one of the "big" ones (not the 750 ml but one about twice that siz...

Re: Minimum kiln depth for drop ring?
I have a Fusion 14 that is only 1/2" "taller", has only top elements, and I have had good success with drops. Everything I have read says you should be fine as long as the glass is 1" away from the elements, and this has been my experience. My schedules are not as conservative as...

Re: Lap Grinder
I have an 8" Glastar. Great machine, still needs to be bigger :). I can coldwork the bottoms of bowls, the edges of smaller flat pieces, and the edges of bowls (no size limit on round bowls of course  ), but I'd really like to be able to work the edges of larger pieces. The disks for t...

Re: Hmmm ... can this technique be ported to glass?
Another random, possibly silly, thought... a non-fusing option could potentially be silver solder. Wrap the pieces with copper foil, put the broken pieces back into the mold, solder the inside, and then remove the bowl to complete the outside. Obviously not as smooth as you would probably like. Dana...

Re: Hmmm ... can this technique be ported to glass?
Silver clay? PMC3 can be fired as low as about 1100 for 30 minutes (other formulas ~1400-1600 deg f). You would have to consider shrinkage (10% off the top of my head...) and it would be darned expensive. An option would be to keep the bowl intact and apply a silver clay paste to the surface to mimi...

Re: Tile saw question
Thanks! My budget is going towards a larger kiln so wasn't looking for a huge saw cost. But cutting is getting very old on my swap top! Cutting is d@amn-near impossible on the swap top, even with a decent blade. My next tool purchase is a tile saw, so I'm paying attention :). I had been looking at ...

I have had a domain name for several years, which I redirected to my Etsy shop. Recently, I purchased the Coffee Cup HTML editor because one of my goals was to get a "real" web site up and going this year. They have a great feature called an "s-drive", which is basically just the...

Re: Recommendations for Wall Mounted Glass Cutter
I can think of a few advantages, the best being space-saving. In my studios, every available horizontal surface is taken and then some. If I could set a cutter up vertically, like the big panel cutters you see at the lumberyard, I'd be able to cut full sheets quickly without eating up precious tabl...

Re: Kiln Questions
you also want to place your shelf such that there is not an element directly facing the edge of glass being fused. This can seal the edges before the bubbles are squeezed out. For a side fired kiln, you probably need to bubble squeeze at the lowest possible point to avoid those edges from sealing u...

Very nice. I like the second one best. Are you gluing the bases?
I love strip construction, but it's hard to keep the edges from spreading in the wrong directions==especially on circles.

My plan is to finish up during this long weekend. I have the first small batch (to test the idea) completed and the remainder about 1/3 of the way.

On the Sentry Xpress 3-key controllers, like is used on some of the Paragon kilns, you press the down arrow. With each press it will cycle through a few options such as adding hold time, changing the target temp, and skipping the remaining time in the segment. If all else fails, read the manual :mrg...

Re: Viewing windows in kilns
All three of my kilns have view windows. Personally, I would not want a kiln without one. I like being able to peek in without opening the kiln.
While you can't see every inch of the kiln, all of my windows are placed so I have a pretty good idea of what's going on inside.
