Max temp for kiln casting into silica/plaster molds
I'm kiln casting glass salmon having success and am struggling with bubbles and surface scum and (what I call) alligator skin on the tail, fin and jaw ends. They are about 2inches thick, 24 inches long. Smaller castings ( half size and thickness) come out almost pristine. I am ramping up to 1515 f f...

Re: annealing times
Thanks Kevin, go to the wick or down to Ucluelet, Signy's gallery and you can see what I'm doing. Give me a reference to this Stone's book you refer to.

annealing times
I'm presently doing a fair amount of open face casting. Large salmon that I've scheduled at 2.5 inches. They run 1.5" to 2" thick at the thickest part to 1/4 inch at the thinnest, 24" long X 6" tall. This is very successful. I've noticed that the Bullseye pyramids, although 6&quo...

Copper and ferric chloride
I've been casting plates to a thickness of 1 inch with an inclusion of thin copper cut outs that have been etched with ferric chloride. The plates have broken and refused in the first firing or in subsequent drop ring firings have either ripped and stayed curiously intact or fractured. There are iss...

Re: Damn burst, kiln needs cleaning!
Thanks Laurie
Its an opportunity to customize this kin as well.
It's timing. I've got a group glass show in March
and a gallery show in May.
I guess I better get to work.
Thanks

Damn burst, kiln needs cleaning!
I had a casting damned with hard fire brick faced with kiln board. It pushed apart during the firing and when I finally got back to my kiln it was annealing. I've pulled the kiln shelf and all damn material off the bottom of the kiln and am left with a 1 1/2" puddle of solid glass on the side o...

lamellar ground silica
It's me again, with questions about casting molds. I've a Potter friend who had a bag of Novacite 550 silica that he got for glazing back in the last century (1990's) I've been playing with the idea of using this very fine silica with my plaster for the face coat in my casting forms with the hope of...
