Re: Brick repair?
My kids bought the kiln via the internet and had it shipped to me, so no local dealer. There is a local dealer, but they don't do repairs. There may be a ceramic studio around here, so that is a good idea. There is also a college that may have a little art department so I'll call over there. Those w...

Ha! The (recent) story of my life. So much to learn, so easy to forget!you'd still run into things like this that you either hadn't read or you'd forgotten reading.

Brick repair?
Back in June, I opened my practically brand new kiln and pieces of broken brick fell onto the shelf and floor. I don't know what happened. I don't want to malign the company, so I'm not providing the company name (yet), but the kiln is 18" square and 14" deep. It has a clamshell and top op...

decorating martini and wine glasses
My neighbor wants to decorate some glasses. I'm guessing he will purchase some inexpensive stemware. I told him to buy glass paints or enamels that can used on any type of glass. Is there anything I should know about firing these, like fire them rim down or up? Any recommended firing schedule? Thanks.

Re: Bubble Repair?
I was really going to drill the holes, which were visible through the transparent bottom disc, but I didn't have an appropriate bit. Because I wanted to get this finished, I flipped the piece and slowly fused again. The Opal Art top layer is now nice and flat, and the bubbles do not bulge out of the...

Re: Dichroic Extract
From what I saw, it looks like the dichroic material has been fired and pulverized. COE 90 is having a "special" on it and they have a link to someone (forgot his name) demonstrating its use. He mixed the material with a bit of water and dabbed it over a design that was sandblasted into th...

Re: Annealing failure
The kiln is an Olympic 1814GFETLC (or whatever they call their glass fusing clamshell). The glass is System 96. There are two 11.5 inch discs. One is transparent, the other is Blackberry Opal Art. It will eventually be slumped into the seder plate mold with the deep cups. I'll just go slowly and see...

Annealing failure
The wind-up: I tried to change the RTC100 program on the fly but (of course) somehow confused the controller. After restarting the program and skipping the completed ramp phases to get back to the fast drop to 950, I got an error message (E A) and the controller refused to work. I made a couple of s...

Thank you. Next time I will use the chad method. In the mean time, drill, baby, drill (I guess).

Bubble Repair?
I fused an 11.5" System 96 Opal Art over a clear base. Even though I thoroughly cleaned both pieces and did a 60 minute bubble squeeze per Spectrum's instructions, I got lots of bubbles. The bubbles did not burst. One is raised on the surface enough that I noticed it immediately; I may not have...

Re: Fusing segment help
SUCCESS!!!! This was my first slumped project. Zowie! Thank you everyone, for your suggestions, for your encouragement, and for your exchange of ideas, because everything that y'all wrote made me think about the various scenarios. I had some 2" square conglemerations that were intended to be ma...

Re: Fusing segment help
Wow! I have a whole page of notes with all the changes I have made. I won't be surprised if it is ruined, but I still hope for the best. Before y'all responded I tried raising it to 1200. Nothing after quite a wait. Then I went to 1225. After about 45 minutes it started looking soft, but again, noth...

Re: Fusing segment help
I sure hope someone is online now because I need advice.
My seder plate has been soaking at 1150 for almost 40 minutes, and it has not begun to slump. Should I be patient, or increase the temperature?

Re: Fusing segment help
I forgot to mention that I am using Spectrum glass for this seder plate project. Does the recommendation of 250 to 1150 still apply, or should my target temperture be higher, say 1200?? Also, the center of the piece is a bit thicker than the edges due to the design elements - but not thicker than 3/...

Seder plate with deep pockets
Yikes - I bought the same mold! (picture attached - I hope) It is too late to return it and get a different one with nice, polite cups, so I would appreciate advice. I understand the part about slumping slowly - 250 to 1150 and hold until almost perfect. My questions are a bit different, so would yo...

Thank you, Bert, for sharing how you form the mezzuzah. The mold I saw advertised is pretty expensive and it won't give me the "look" I am going after.

A different kiln cooling question
My 18" square Olympic (13.5 height), takes FOREVER to cool. I don't have it jam-packed with thick glass, just beginner-type coaster-sized tiles, an occasional 8" plate. It takes hours and hours to cool from 800 deg. to 450 deg. (6-7 hrs.). I can leave the house at 6:30 a.m. with the kiln a...
