Re: Leatherbarrow's Crackle Book is Available
I purchased the book when it was first mentioned, read it, and followed the directions to produce a halfway decent first attempt. It is well work the $18. I'm going to Brad's class on special effects (including crackle) at the end of the month and will be a little bit ahead of the game:) Emily Emily...

Limit to recycling?
I've been making drop ring bowls. Usually I cut the rim off the top, and for every two drops I can add some clear and recycle those rims into a new bowl. My question is whether there is a limit to how often I can do that. Some of the glass in each rim is likely to be "new" glass and much o...

Screen Melt Scum/Devit
In the images below you see a screen melt bowl blank. Depending on the colors, I'm getting a scum in some areas (e.g. just above the reflections in the images below). I'm not sure if this is classic Devit, or if it is something else peculiar to screen or pot melts. Since high temps are needed for th...

Re: Olympic Kiln Repair Question
Steve and Tom - Thanks for those ideas. I also called Olympic and Bob told me to pull out the ceramic insulator and stick a small screwdriver back in there and scrape away some firebrick and clean the scrapings out and then the ceramic insulator will recess further and expose more pigtail. He said 1...

Re: Screen Melt Bowl Failures
Jim and Joe - I'm using Bullseye only. I think Joe's point about annealing could be the answer. I measured the pieces and although I gave the glass plenty of time and space to spread, the thickness is between 7 and 8 mm instead of the usual 6 mm. In terms of annealing and firing schedule, since it w...

Screen Melt Bowl Failures
I've been making small bowls (5 1/2" diameter circles in a Bullseye ball mold) with good success EXCEPT that every time I try to use a screen melt circle as a starting point they crack early in the slumping process. Even starting my kiln at the lowest setting this still happens. Using the same ...

Olympic Kiln Repair Question
Today my Olympic Hotsie P just stopped heating mid-fire. After it cooled and I unplugged it, I took off the metal cage that surrounds the electronics. As shown in the photo, the wire going to the top element broke just at the edge of the ceramic insulator. The pigtail from the element broke, and par...

Re: Ceramic kiln with manual controls (low, Med, High)
Molly - Both of my kilns have elements only in the sides, not in the top. So, I don't think that alone makes them "ceramic," The first time I ran each kiln I started at the lowest setting and watched each one very carefully to get some idea of how hot it would get, and how long that would ...

Re: Ceramic kiln with manual controls (low, Med, High)
Molly - I'm not sure about the ceramic part of this equation, but I have two small kilns (one Evenheat and one Olympic) that have manual controls. They have a couple more choices that just lo-med-hi, but it is all manual. The good part of this is that I have been forced to learn a lot about what is ...

Tack fuse first?
I'm trying to make a "tartan" bowl for a wedding present. After experimenting with colors, I've cut red and greed transparent strips. I have two layers with the strip colors in different positions, and the plan is to fuse them with one layer 90 degrees rotated to get the "weave" ...
