Keeping firescale
So a bit of background first. I have some bullseye reactive cloud and it won't react with other glass in my microwave kiln. I wondered what would happen if I used raw, untreated copper wire, if anything was going to cause a reaction that would. What I have ended up with is the copper having turned a...

Re: Joining up stringers
http://www.morganica.com/bloggery/2012/latest/methods-cutting-stringer/ Thanks for that, I looked at it earlier this week. I didn't quite get to grips with it. My personal preference is to measure and roll the cutter over the top, then rotate the stringer a quarter turn toward me and push gently. S...

Re: Joining up stringers
I was using really cheap hair spray as well (probably should have moved to a more ventilated room but I digress) but I was wondering whether that was causing the scum on the top of my glass after firing so I stopped, I have since read up on devitrification so will move back to hair spray. I also use...

Re: Joining up stringers
Thanks Mike, great points. For my current project I really want the relief created by only contour fusing, but I can see how flattening the stringers would be REALLY useful and will definately bear that in mind for future projects. My stringers seem to have a natural flat side (I guess from when the...

Re: Joining up stringers
Well, happy news and sad news. Sad news: for some reason two attempts suffered from devit. 3rd bit from the same glass that didn't have devit ever before the last 2 is cooling now... hopefully clean. Happy news: Maguyvered an old zippo filling it with meths + stringer = bent stringers :D I wish I co...

Re: Joining up stringers
A candle... I would never have thought of that, off to Tesco tonight I think :) I'm guessing I'd need to use some form of tweezer to hold the stringer an inch away from where it needs to gend? Once the stringer goes soft, is there enough time to place it before it hardens again? I think we h...

Joining up stringers
There has always been a bit of rivalry between the Scots and the English, but I'm over it, why is my glass not :) I'm trying to may glass flags and I have managed to get the St Patrics and St Georges cross without too much of a problem, the Union Jack took a couple of swings, but the St Andrews cros...

Re: Entrapped Water
212. water evaporates at 212 degrees Careful, water boils at 100C (212F) and you probably don't want the movement and bubbling associated with that. Water evaporates at any temperature above 32F, but faster higher :) 190 is a REALLY hot cup of coffee, so a good temp to let the water out slow enough...

Re: Bullseye reactive and microwave kilns
Yep, I'm using the light turquoise frit with the reactive cloud. I've seen the output in a test sample so I know it does work. I've tried the Egyptian blue as well.

Re: cracked dichro
I'm not trying to copy any specific piece, I'm just after the process that creates them
Ripple dichro, neat-o, I'm going to look at getting hold of some of that right now
I also thought about dremmeling the low bits in the black herringbone I have, something to try I think.
Thanks guys.

Re: cracked dichro
Crinkle dicro is now on my list of things to try, but that's not what I think I saw. I'm still hunting for the original image, but here is something like it: http://img3.etsystatic.com/000/0/5242321/il_570xN.362309631.jpg The dichro seems to have a loose carrier bag look about it. You can see the da...

Re: Bullseye reactive and microwave kilns
Ah, ok, I thought it might have something to do with time. I might see if I can work out some wattage that keeps the heat high, but not too high.
Mind you with a proper kiln that ramp up and hold usually lasts a couple of hours though doesn't it?

cracked dichro
Hi there, I have seen some really nice effects with what looks like herringbone dichroic. The surface seems to look cracked and rough and still a little rippled and I'm not sure how to replicate that process. When I try it, the glass either flattens and ends up with a smooth metal coating, or else t...

Bullseye reactive and microwave kilns
Are there any notes on the net on how to make the reactive glass react? I have a cryptic colour sheet from bullseye that says the reactive temperature is 810C but not a lot else. I think they will explain if you pay for one of their lessons but I'm not overly sure. I have a microwave kiln and I gues...

Re: Dicro woes
I'm using bullseye glass and dichro, all 90 COE. I did accidentally fire some dichro with the coating down, the little bubble bit on here: http://images.ecwid.com/images/114133/89927439.jpg It's interesting that the glass starts off pretty clear and then gets the pearl coating above (I think this wa...

Dicro woes
Love dicro!!! So I've been playing with it. Mostly abstract play pieces seeing what the different bits do and how they react with regular glass and iridium and I'm generally enjoying myself and have a pretty well worked process with my microwave kiln. I have generally had a bunch of success with the...

Re: Microwave kilns
I think I'm on to some things, thanks to all the feedback. 1) new bag of medium frit, less bubbles - I think because the bottom of the previous bag collects the powder and crap. 2) lower power on the microwave, about 350watts (I think) means 25 minutes before anything glows, but I'm thinking faux &q...

Re: Microwave kilns
Sorry, I meant to clarify. If I use the heart shape on the teardrop shape, no bubbles, if I use exaclty the same heart shapes and sizes on the rectangular shape, I get large air pockets in the crease of the heart in about 2/3rds of the time.
