Re: Latest Project Completed

This really is wonderful! I wouldn't worry about controlling things too much, I think the symmetry and balanced design is part of what makes this piece stand out. Congratulations!

Centering glass when draping

I am draping over a stainless steel bowl, and firing in a front loading GL24 kiln. I'm having trouble getting my glass perfectly centered before firing. Any tips?

Need to vent kiln if reusing a plaster/silica mold?

Hello!

I have been able to reuse some plaster/silica open face molds for low temp fired pate de verre. If I fill these already fired molds with dry frit, is there any reason to vent my kiln?

Recycled or eco friendly packaging materials

Hello all, I am looking to find something like recycled shredded cardboard to use for packaging some fragile glass pieces for shipment. Does anyone on this board use this type of material, and can you offer some advice on how to go about this? I've done some web searching to locate such materials lo...

Do I need to adjust my firing schedule when stacking shelves

I am loading my Paragon GL24 kiln (front load, top and side elements) with many (16) smallish open face pate de verre pieces. I am thinking of adding an additional shelf with a few more pieces. I'll check on how it all looks when at the process temp, but just wondering if I should adjust the schedul...

Re: Fine line sifter

Thanks for the helpful information. That jewelers tweezer/scoop tool looks pretty handy. I also use the reductive process. Works great.

Fine line sifter

Anyone have experience using these tools? I want to lay precise lines of a combo of Bullseye 01/08 frit/powder in pate de verre. Any suggestions? Thanks. http://www.fusionheadquarters.com/product_p/finsif-.htm http://www.delphiglass.com/fusing-supplies/fusing-tools/frit-sifter-1-16 http://www.arrows...

Double-wall ceramic fiber molds

Is anyone familiar with Etsuko Nishi's process of making molds using crushed ceramic fibers and CMC for thin, double-layered forms? There's an article about this process in an old GAS journal and she describes using "ready-crushed ceramic fibers from Shinagaway Refractories Co". Any idea a...

Re: lettering fused into or onto glass

Interesting. Have you had any problem with uncapped decals wearing off? Also, any thoughts on using them with food serving pieces?

Re: lettering fused into or onto glass

Bob,
Is your decal on the outer surface of the glass? Did you cover or spray the glass to coat the decal?

Re: how to support glass for this mold?

I thought it was always better to drape over stainless steel molds rather than slump. Am I incorrect?

In terms of who has been left out of the conversation, I also feel the same way about Edris Eckhardt. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and I really do mean that, but I do get a "good old boy's network" impression of the Studio Glass Movement.

Re: Papyros fiber paper

I recently bought a few sheets of Papyros from Delphi Glass http://www.delphiglass.com/fusing-supplies/fiber-paper-shelf-wash/spectrum-papyros-shelf-paper-sheet I prefer to use kiln wash, but will occasionally use thin fire. I was drawn to the claim that this paper can be reused, but after firing so...

Grant proposal - budget question

I am working on a grant proposal, and wondering if anyone can offer insights on a couple things in my budget.

1. Is there an average going wage rate for early career glass artists?

2. Any advice on how to calculate energy costs of running my kiln?

Thanks!

Re: Casting bronze with glass

I tried combining fired bronze metal clay with kiln casted glass once. Basically I extruded the bronze clay to form a leaf stem and veins, fired the bronze, then included the stem/veins in Bullseye frit to make a leaf. There was significant cracking of the glass around the thicker bronze areas (stem...

Re: Thin fire over drape mold?

Thanks everyone. I tried it yesterday and am actually pleased with my results. I was concerned that if the thinfire wasn't perfectly smooth all around the mold, it would have an adverse affect. It didn't effect the end result at all. But I'm not slumping a precise bowl or anything like that. I am dr...
