Re: Molds are there better Molds?
I'm from Colour de Verre and our molds were being discussed earlier in the thread. We only recommend two methods for priming our molds: MR-97 Aerosol Boron Nitride and Hotline Primo Primer. You can see videos about how to use the products at http://www.colourdeverre.com/go/primo and http://www.colo...

Re: HEPA vacuum
I just purchased a 5 gal ShopVac for my glass workroom. There were two types of bags that you could buy with it, one was rated for finer particles such as drywall dust. Those are the ones I purchased. I still need to get one of the nicer filters -- just using the foam filter for now.

Re: Molds are there better Molds?
Just used a Color de Verre mold for the 1st time. Followed the directions to the letter and still has a slightly stuck piece. I was able to get it out and maybe it was my fault and I didn't have an even coat of BN. What I don't like is the rough texture and spikes on some pieces even though I was v...

Re: kilns and storms--power surges?
The Glassmaster controller on my Skutt will turn off the kiln if it detects it is overfired -- basically if the temp increases more than... 50 deg f, I think... on a cool-down. The very first time I fired the kiln, it did this. I called Skutt and they sent out new relays. Haven't had a problem sinc...

Re: kilns and storms--power surges?
I still don't understand why it is possible to sell kilns without simple safety devices to keep the kilns over firing or turning off when the lid/door is opened. These are simple devices and can be retrofitted. The Glassmaster controller on my Skutt will turn off the kiln if it detects it is overfi...

Re: Question about kiln wash shelf life
Interesting! So a mold will not have the same problem as a shelf does, if you do not change the wash each time? I would LOVE not to have to redo the molds. I use Thinfire on shelves typically. I only redo my molds when the kiln wash starts flaking, which is after many firings. The problem is usuall...

Re: kilns and storms--power surges?
I leave my big Skutt plugged in, but the breaker switched off. It is the only thing on the breaker. The big plug/unwieldy cord was such a bear to plug/unplug (and the controller on the Skutt appears to have no "off" switch like my Paragon kilns) that the electrician suggested I leave it pl...

Re: Has anyone used this mold?
I would call and ask what the measurements are for the bottom square. If it is not very big, you will have problems getting the glass to slump fully into the depression, and ultimately, the bowl will not sit flatly. If you have a lap grinder to finish off the bottom, it is not as big of a deal (thou...

Re: Schedule advice
If you are capping with clear, the design of the piece is prone to bubbles -- anywhere two pieces come together, gaps between the two pieces will cause air pockets, which result in bubbles when fired. There are many schedules here on the board and on the Internet for a "bubble squeeze" whi...

Re: Needing Advice about Boron Nitride
And are you sure this is separator residue and not devit? "Milky scum..dull areas and streaks...rough surface..." that won't come off sounds it's not just a BN problem. You might be having devitrification issues. I have seen the same problem. It is not devit -- definitely a coating left b...

Re: Copper inclusions with float glass
I've been firing 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares with 3" sq. copper foil inclusions allowing a 1/4" border on all sides. They are coming out dark blue with grey ash highlites. I have scrubbed the copper foil with steelwool and acetone followed by soap and water. Iv'e faced the tin side ...

Re: New Spectrum Papyros Kiln Shelf Paper
The paper stuck to the back of the opals but the transparents lifted off easily without any damage. Even with a torn section, the rest of the sheet stayed intact. You could definately get more firings out of this using transparents. After firing, the paper does not break down to powder. I scouped u...

The lid has the element in it. Also how do I program the controller to dry out the kiln wash. Thanks for any help. I have u...

Re: Questions about rock inclusions
[quote="Reba"]hi dana, when you say the bowl was slumped over rocks, do you mean the bowl achieved its slumped shape from the rocks, or did the glass slump and contain the rocks? thanks, reba [quote="Reba"] The rocks were not included in the bowl -- they were kiln-washed and the ...

It would really be most helpful to see images of glass projects that have used any of those brands/enamel colors before I would splurge on the product(s). I have definitely been checking out those product lines you mention Cate. Thank you. I'll keep looking... Does anyone have images of BE projects...

Re: Hobby Kiln making business
Peter- check into the legal crap. Will you have to certify the kilns in Oz? Here in los estados unidos, UL listings can put a serious dent in start up costs. Business insurance must include product liability. Will you have to incorporate (ltd in AU?)? We were discussing this at the "datalogger...
