Re: New Studio - New Kiln

As noted, my experience with fibre kilns is extremely brief so I have nothing to compare. I can say I'm in a humid sub-tropical environment and haven't noticed any kiln issues. If Haydo reads this thread he may comment as he's in a much more humid climate than my location. As for my brick kiln, it h...

Re: New Studio - New Kiln

Hi Sharol, glad to see you're almost up and running again. My experience of an all-fibre kiln, from many years ago, put me off ever going that route again. I'd taken a picture of a brick kiln I'd used at Pilchuck to a large industrial-kiln manufacturer in Vancouver and requested a kiln of similar si...

Re: R & R Glasscast 910

Thank you, Dick. Our area has been OK. Our drought has broken locally but some areas, people and wildlife, have been terribly impacted.

Sadly, today three American air crew died when their water-bomber crashed while fighting the fires near the Snowy Mountains. A tragic loss.

Re: wet saw suggestions

Am I missing something? A tile saw should be properly waterproofed and grounded. Nothing to add other than the right blade and blade stiffeners, as suggested by Kevin.

Re: enamel suggestions

Peter, a used appliance box, such as a TV or microwave box, with appropriate holes cut in it and a strong extractor fan makes a good spray booth that can be flat-packed for easy storage when not in use.

Take care with these terrible bushfires. Jen

Thank you, Don. Thought I'd missed it or it wasn't happening this year.

R&G enamels?

Have a good one and a brilliant 2020. Jen

Re: Silver foil & leaf

Jennifer, note disclaimer: I haven't tried this with silver leaf but you can remove tarnish from silver by immersing it in hot water in a glass or plastic basin (non-metallic) touching a piece of aluminum foil. Add baking soda to the water and stir in. The tarnish will float off, along with a micros...

Re: air supply for blasting hood?

I forgot to mention the in-line fume trap and water trap, but must confess that I haven't changed the filter in the fume trap ever since I was advised that if the ambient air is clean and you can't smell any fumes or have any side effects it's not necessary. (Filter-free...sounds like a cheap cigare...

Re: air supply for blasting hood?

Bonnie, you say you blast outside so already have the most expensive item you need, the compressor. Take your hood and the information about your compressor to a company that supplies sand-blasting equipment.** They should be able to provide you with a regulator and fittings and a hose to split the ...

Re: Glues and silicones

Lisa, be careful using adhesive on mirror backs. Many adhesives will destroy the mirroring so be sure to choose one that won't. I've forgotten the North American one I used to use. Glass installers use a particular brand that won't harm the mirroring. I'm sure that information is readily available f...

Re: Tack fusing temp. for frits

Hi Havi, I've just seen this thread and have done just what I believe you are looking for, frit melted to stick to itself, nothing underneath. It was used as flower centres. If you haven't found the answer by experimenting let me know and I'll look for my notes.

Re: Fusing antique glass

I see you've already been given good advice re buying some new 'old-style' glass. I couldn't find information on gravity glass and haven't heard the term before, but did read quite a bit about Guinness glasses in the search. Being a fan I found that interesting. Some time ago I put a piece of 2 mil ...

Re: Using Rare Earth Oxides

Hi Jim and Jim, That remark about F/B was not made snidely. I noted that Jagboy 69 was relatively new to the board but spoke disparagingly about the members' lack of response to Jan's question. I thought maybe he expected a F/B-like response where all sorts of 'advice' would be offered regardless of...

As Don suggested, you can alter your wiring to access 220 when your dryer isn't in use. I did it for years in Canada without any inconvenience.

Re: How do I present my Art?

Interesting concept, Havi. How was it eventually displayed? I agree, a wooden fence 'containing' the free-flowing water is antithetical to the out-of-control nature of a flood. The size isn't obvious from the photo but it must be fairly large if it could be displayed on the floor. Adhering it to a p...

Re: Float Glass Reco Needed for Decals

Assuming the dollhouse won't be going in the dishwasher, if you buy picture frames at a charity shop and remove the glass you'll have thin, cheap glass. The frit could be glued on. That's not something I'd ever do with a piece of art glass but, along with the decals, might achieve the look your frie...
